He’ll remain on-board with id Software, the company he helped co-found, while at the same time joining the Oculus Rift team as its new chief technology officer. Id stated on its Twitter feed today that Carmack would not be leaving the company and will help continue to guide its forthcoming projects.

Carmack has been a long-time fan of Oculus Rift’s virtual 3D technology, giving it his full recommendation when it began its KickStarter campaign. He said, “For a certain segment of the population, the hacker/maker crowd, this is going to be awesomely cool to work with.”

We can’t wait to see what he does for the company, and wish him the best of luck in his new position.
