Welcome back to Getting Down-Loaded, your weekly recap of all downloadable games for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade – and some WiiWare thrown in for good measure when something comes out worth noting. But enough talk, let’s get down to games…
PlayStation Network
Plenty of full retail titles came out on the download front this week for PSN, headed up by Dishonored ($59.99), Bethesda’s tale of revenge and stealth butchery, if there is such a thing (and there is, according to Corvo). Konami’s Birds of Steel ($29.99) gives you the opportunity to fly with classic World War II bombers, and is very good in multiplayer. Capcom’s Devil May Cry HD Collection ($29.99) is jam-packed with Dante shooting fun, particularly with parts 1 and 3. 2’s in there as well, if you’re curious. Finally, Atlus’ The Testament of Sherlock Holmes ($39.99) tells a very different take on the detective, one that follows a much more darker route.
As for PlayStation Network games, there’s a ton to choose from. Heading up the pack is the long-awaited Retro City Rampage ($14.99), the 8-bit Grand Theft Auto game that’s been in the works for about 20 years now. Glad to see it’s finally gotten a release. This is one of those “Cross-Buy” games, so you’ll get the PS3 and PS Vita versions for the same price.
Derrick the Deathfin ($7.99) is a fun side-scrolling platformer-like adventure where you control a very hungry fish, flying through hoops and devouring fellow fish in an effort to stay alive. If you like papercraft productions, you’ll probably love this.
Machinarium ($9.99), the PC adventure, finally makes its way to the US PlayStation Store, enabling you to control a quirky robot as he solves puzzles in an effort to make his way into a strange mechanical castle.
Joe Danger 2: The Movie ($14.99) first debuted on Xbox Live Arcade a few weeks back, but now comes to PSN with all its fun tricks and leaderboards intact, along with some bonus challenges that are sure to test your stunt mettle.
Warlords ($9.99) is Atari’s remake of the classic multiplayer game, where folks fight it out on a battlefield, throwing fireballs and soldiers at one another while attempting to defend their castle. Featuring online play and a classic top-down view (like the original game), this is sure to be a party favorite.
On the PSOne Classic front, we’ve got Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV, a classic strategy game; Saiyuki: Journey West, a fun adventure title; and the beat-em-up Destrega. All three games are $5.99 apiece.
Also worth noting – PlayStation Plus subscribers can get significant discounts on Derrick the Deathfin and Revenge of Shinobi (it’s only a buck!), and are able to download King of Fighters XIII free of charge.
Other titles came out as well, but we’ll cover them in the Xbox Live Arcade section, since they’re multi-platform.
Nintendo eShop (Wii)
The Last Blade II (900 Wii points, $9) is another classic SNK brawling game for the Neo-Geo, featuring traditional warriors doing battle against one another. This one looks splendid, and is well priced considering the original game went for like $200.
Xbox Live Arcade
Though Microsoft’s update wasn’t as lively as PlayStation Network’s, a lot of great games came out for it this week…
First up, Telltale Games released the latest chapter in its amazing The Walking Dead series, titled Around Every Corner ($4.99). Like previous chapters, you’ve got some tough decisions ahead of you while you try to keep you and your allies alive in the face of a zombie apocalypse. (This game is also available for PlayStation Network and Steam/PC.)
Naughty Bear: Panic In Paradise ($14.99) brings back the deadly assassin he invades a tropical resort just loaded with fuzzies, forcing you to kill them in a number of ways, merely for the sake that you weren’t invited to their party. Because, really, isn’t he just, um, the life of the party? (This game is also available for PlayStation Network.)
Worms Revolution ($9.99) is the latest in Team 17’s worm battling series, where you take your soldiers and try to stay alive in the face of danger. Filled with hilarious gags, creative level design, unlimited player customization and online competition, Worms Revolution is a must. (This game is also available for PlayStation Network.)
And that’ll do it this week for Getting Down-Loaded! We’ll be back with another recap of games for you next week. In the meantime, get to downloading!
