Videogame movie adaptations are nothing new, but very rarely do they 100% fall in-line with gaming canon. What’s nice is when that happens is knowing in advance to temper expectations and that’s exactly what The Coalition studio head, Rod Fergusson, did in a recent interview.
Speaking with IGN, Fergusson revealed that though there is a Gears of War movie on the way, it will be set in an alternate reality outside of the game’s main narrative. “In order for the movie to be successful, it has to be a great movie first and a Gears movie second,” Fergusson said. “Basically the way that we sort of reconciled that was, we said, ‘oh the movie should be an alternate reality. It should not be dependent on the game story, nor should it influence the game story.'”
The studio head also added that they were pulling from the comics and books as well because though it won’t be following the games to the very last detail, the Gears franchise is rife with worldbuilding, making it an easy target to hit when bringing some of these characters we know and love to the big screen.
The Gears of the War movie was confirmed by Universal back in 2016 with F. Scott Frazier as the lead writer. We don’t have any release date or casting news at this time, but hopefully we’ll be learning more soon!
