Not every story in the video game industry can be a win. Unfortunately, the team at Loot Drop learned this the hard way.

It was announced that Ubisoft has canceled its Facebook social game Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Commander, a game that was set to tie in with events from the previously released Future Soldier for consoles. The developer posted on its Facebook wall: “Sad news. Today, Ghost Recon: Commander was canceled As a result, we laid off a team of awesome developers.”

190,000 monthly users were playing the title, but apparently that wasn’t enough to meet Ubisoft’s necessary business standards.

“Ghost Recon Commander will unfortunately be discontinued because the game play mechanics did not resonate with the core gamer audience,” an Ubisoft representative explained.. “For our Ghost Recon fans, we will continue to operate Ghost Recon Commander from now until the end of the calendar year with monetization removed.

“This decision does not reflect a change of strategy for any of Ubisoft’s other social games currently in development or operation.”

We certainly wish the laid off developers the best of luck. You guys will bounce back, I’m sure.
