Divekick, a game that began as a passion project, has turned into a fairly popular game among the fighting game community. The game is easy enough for casual gamers to play, but it still has quite a bit of depth. It has already been featured at several tournaments during the development process, and it doesn’t look like things will be slowing down anytime soon.
One of the creators of Divekick runs his own tournament known as the Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament (UFGT). The Chicago-based event takes place annually in the springtime and will be entering its tenth iteration in 2014. A beta version of Divekick has been featured at the tournament the last two years, so it’s a safe bet the released version will be a headlining title at the 2014 event.
Aside from the developer-run tournament, Divekick was featured at several other events during its development process, from tournaments to trade shows such as E3 and PAX. Most notably the game was featured at the Evolution Fighting Games Championship in Vegas in July. Will it be back next year? It’s hard to say, but we do know it will be getting some kind of tournament support.
There have already been quite a few Divekick online tournaments in the short time since the title released. The community is eager to play the game because it’s by far one of the easiest fighting games to pick up and play.
Evolution games are generally announced early in the year, so Divekick has several months to make an impact on the tournament scene. It’s a safe bet to assume most major tournaments will feature Divekick in some capacity, even if it’s only as a side event.
The question isn’t whether or not Divekick will have a competitive scene, but more importantly, which platform will the game be played on. Divekick is available on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and on the PC via Steam. For many fighting game fans, the PS3 is the platform of choice, but playing on the PC allows for use of the custom Divekick controller. At most major events, expect to be playing on the PlayStation 3 version of the title, however it would not be surprising to see the PC version and custom controller at UFGT next year.
One thing Divekick has going for it is the fact that anyone and everyone can play it with relative ease. People who have never competed in a fighting game before are heavily involved in online tournaments for Divekick. While online tournament attendance doesn’t equate to offline numbers, the fact that so many people who are new to fighting games are getting excited over the prospect of playing Divekick means that it should draw in a decent number of new tournament players.
