Update: Blizzard issued the following statement to Game Informer addressing the potential release of Diablo 3 on consoles:

Bashiok’s response on Twitter was intended as a confirmation that we’re actively exploring the possibility of developing a console version of Diablo III, as we’ve mentioned in the past. This is not a confirmation that Diablo III is coming to any console platform.

Our focus right now is on finishing the PC/Mac version of Diablo III and making sure it’s a worthwhile successor to the Diablo series.

Original Story: PC role-player Diablo 3 will be released on consoles, Blizzard has confirmed.

Blizzard community manager Micah Whiple broke the news via his Twitter feed. No specific consoles were mentioned.

When asked if he could confirm or deny rumours the anticipated hack and slash was on the way for consoles, Whiple responded with the affirmative:

“Yup. Josh Mosqueira is lead designer for the Diablo console project.”

Mosqueira previously worked as design director on Company of Heroes at Relic.

Diablo 3 is due “early 2012” for PC and Mac.
