Dark Souls Developers Reveal Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

by Larryn Bell

After showing a mysterious teaser trailer at last year’s E3, developer FromSoftware had fans excited for a potential sequel to Bloodborne. However, it turns out that the teaser had nothing to do with Bloodborne at all. In fact, FromSoftware’s next game is not even part of the Souls series, as far as we can tell. Instead, during the Microsoft E3 2018 press briefing, FromSoftware debuted the first gameplay trailer for their brand new IP, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Directed by Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a third-person action-adventure game inspired by the mythology and setting of feudal Japan. Players take on the role of “the one-armed wolf” Sekiro, a fierce warrior who is tasked with rescuing his master while seeking revenge. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice looks like what we imagine the Souls-like Nioh or the upcoming action game Ghosts of Tsushima would look like if they were made by FromSoftware.

FromSoftware has teamed up with publisher Activision to create the upcoming single-player adventure. “Collaborating with Activision on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has been a very exciting experience for us,” said Miyazaki. “With Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice many FromSoftware team members, including myself, are thrilled to be exploring themes of Sengoku Japan and ninja for the first time. We can’t wait for everyone to discover what’s in store for the game.”

“Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will not only add a new and exciting genre to Activision’s portfolio, but will also give players an experience that’s unlike any other FromSoftware game to date,” said Steve Young, the Chief Revenue Officer at Activision.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is scheduled to release globally in early 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game will sell for about $60 and pre-orders are available now on the game’s official website.
