Remedy shared information regarding a multiplayer spin-off and other Control-related developments as part of an announcement on their investors.remedygames.com website.
According to the information provided, the multiplayer spin-off will feature co-op PvE with up to four players supported and will release on both next-gen consoles (Xbox Series X | S, PS5) as well as PC.
Control is Getting a Multiplayer Spin-Off
If you loved Control, you may be excited to hear that a multiplayer spin-off is in the works. The multiplayer spin-off comes as part of a co-publishing and development agreement between Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games.
As previously mentioned, the multiplayer spin-off will offer 4-player co-op PvE (player vs. environment) gameplay. A name for the spin-off has yet to be provided. As of right now, it’s referred to by its codename, Condor.
Looking at the rest of the announcement, it’s noted that Condor will be built using Remedy’s Northlight engine. Once it’s released, it’ll be available on Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The initial development budget for Condor is noted to be EUR 25 million, with the development and marketing investments to be evenly split between Remedy and 505 Games along with “future net revenues generated by the game.”
The last aspect of the development and marketing plans makes it sound like Condor may have in-game microtransactions. A statement about multiplayer games offering a longer revenue stream is also included in the announcement.
“As a multiplayer game, Condor has the potential to engage the gaming community in the long run, contributing to 505 Games’ product revenue stream longer than traditional games,” Rami and Raffi Galante, co-CEOs of Digital Bros Group remarked.
And if Condor doesn’t do as well as they’d like revenue wise, it sounds like they may have something else to fall back on as the announcement all but confirms plans to develop another game set in the Control universe.
“505 Games and Remedy Entertainment have outlined high-level collaboration terms to further expand the Control franchise with a bigger-budget Control-game, to be agreed in more detail in the future.”
Something else of note to us personally is a comment Remedy CEO Tero Virtala makes about expanding Remedy’s games (in general) into long-term franchises. We can’t help but be excited at the idea, and we can’t wait to see what other surprises Remedy has up their sleeve.
“We have successfully collaborated with 505 Games for over four years and have both become stronger in our respective fields. We are happy to extend and deepen our partnership,” Teri Vitala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment, explained.
“This new agreement supports Remedy’s aims to expand our games into long-term franchises, create benchmark-setting games, strengthen our commercial capabilities and collaborate with great partners with whom we can succeed together.”
Other than that, we’re looking forward to hearing more about codename Condor – the Control multiplayer spin-off – in the future. Until then, what are your thoughts on Control getting a multiplayer spin-off and Remedy’s plans to collaborate with 505 Games on another Control game?
