Prima at Comic-Con International 2012 in San Diego: Day One Recap

We're at Comic-Con and here are our thoughts from the show's first day!
This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

Following the Wednesday night Transformers event where we got hands on with Fall of Cybertron (check out our impressions if you haven’t already), we made ourselves good and ready for the first day of Comic-Con 2012.  Thousands of fans thronged to the halls of the San Diego Convention Center to see what was on the show floor, and also attend panels featuring a variety of talent.  Since Prima Games has a huge place at the event (giving out goodies for Sleeping Dogs and Darksiders II), we decided to make the most out of our first day.

We started off at Epic Games’ panel, where Jessica Chobot moderated Cliff Bleszinski and several staffers discussing the upcoming PC game Fortnite.  They showed off some footage from the game, including building capabilities, resourcing through items in the world and the enemies you’ll be dealing with throughout the game.  For good measure, the company gave out T-shirts and fast food-style server hats to everyone who attended.

From there, we stopped by Warner Bros.’ booth, where we got an in-depth look at Injustice: Gods Among Us.  Our impressions will be posting in full on our site soon, if they haven’t already.  For good measure, we also got to chat with Ed Boon, the legendary co-creator of Mortal Kombat, who’s working on Injustice.

Up next, we arrived at the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary panel, where we got an insider’s look at the upcoming collector’s edition of the game, which sells for $150 and features a collectible Ryu status, along with other video goodies and a plethora of games.  They also discussed the upcoming PS Vita release of Street Fighter x Tekken, which has a street date of October 23 here in the US, and will come with cross-play features built in.  From there, surprise guests Yoshinori Ono (producer of the Street Fighter series) and Katsuhiro Harada (producer of Tekken) showed up, in costume, to lead the crowd in the biggest Shoryuken flash mob ever filmed.  (Yes, we took part.)

We quickly stopped at the Resident Evil 6 suite and had a quick chat with some of the stars from Psych (an enjoyable roundtable involving pizza and fist bumps), and then we attended yet another panel featuring The Most Dangerous Women of Comic-Con.  Adrianne Curry (The Tester), Abbie Heppe (Respawn Entertainment) and other ladies talked about their influence on geek culture, as well as stuff they enjoyed at Comic-Con.  Curry, decked out in full Raptor Jesus garb, stopped to grab a picture, which you can find in the article  (We owe you a shot, Adrianne!)

From there, we spent a lot of time roaming the floor to see what booths were on hand, for gamers to check out.  THQ had a huge South Park: The Stick of Truth set-up, complete with a ramshackle house resembling one from the TV show.  (We’ve posted our impressions of the demo a while back, check them out.)  We also stopped by Capcom’s booth, where once again they were selling collectibles exclusively at Comic-Con, while also showing off a number of playable titles.  Activision also had a corner of the space taken for themselves, with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, 007 Legends and other games for attendees to try out.  Ubisoft also took a huge spot on the floor with Assassins Creed III, giving out inflatable hatchets and special edition shirts for whoever pre-ordered the game at the event.

After the show came to a close, we got a chance to attend a few parties.  We ran into a number of celebrities over the course of the evening, including Emo Philips (Adventure Time), Orlando Jones (Black Dynamite), Paul Scheer (Attack of the Show) and a number of others.  The SyFy Haven party was a good time, as we got to catch up with Emily Rose, who previously appeared in the Uncharted games but has since moved on to television.

Up next, we checked out a Necomimi party, an event where the company was showing off its innovative animal ear technology, where users could use brain waves to control their reactions.  The party was pretty good, taking place on the rooftop of the Hotel Andaz, where we got a wide-open view of the city.

Finally, we headed to Ubisoft’s party, at the Ultimate Skybox.  The event featured various playable titles, including Zombi U, Rayman Legends, Marvel’s The Avengers: Battle For Earth, Just Dance 4 and Assassin’s Creed III, as well as first revealed for Spartacus: Legends and The Expendables 2.  One of our highlights of the evening was playing Spartacus against an actual star from the show, Liam McIntyre.  Oh, and we can’t forget being able to turn ourselves into zombies using the Zombi U simulator.

Overall, it was a great first day, and we’re just getting started on the second.  Look for a recap tomorrow right here at Prima!
