Borderlands 3 Loot Instancing and World Scaling

Borderlands 3 does loot right with loot instancing, while making it easy for players of different levels to sync up.

In looter shooters, sometimes you’ll get those “loot ninjas” that take all of the drops, leaving nothing behind for their teammates. Borderlands 3 thankfully doesn’t do that and the team over at Gearbox made sure that they made the latest entry incredibly balanced both in terms of loot and how the world of Pandora adapts to players of varying levels.

Loot Instancing

How the loot instancing works in Borderlands 3 is everyone has their own line of loot. If I go pick up the guns in a chest, that won’t remove them for my teammate. In fact, if my teammate is a different level, the loot found in the chest will scale to his level without affecting my drop at all. Pretty neat, right? No more loot horders and no more guns we can’t use.

Level Balancing

A lot of games that have online play include some form of world scaling. In Borderlands 3, a level 25 and a level 5 can play together and neither experience will be negatively impacted by the other’s place in-game. The enemies and the drops will both reflect the respective player level, making it very easy for friends to sync up and play without having to worry about getting “too far ahead” or being left behind in the dust.

Don’t want either of those features for some reason? No worries, both level balancing and loot instancing are completely voluntary and can be toggled off at any time.

Borderlands 3 is slated for a September 13th launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Keep it tuned in here at Prima because we were there at the gameplay event this week and got some serious hands-on time with the upcoming title!
