Of Bird and Cage Lets You Experience a Metal Album in Video Game Form

Have you ever wanted to play through a video game while listening to music that’s not a rhythm game? You’ll soon be able to with a game called Of Bird and Cage which looks to offer the experience of a playable metal album that’s not based around rhythm elements.

Instead, Of Bird and Cage is touted as a “story-driven music game” that features a dark story based around subjects of trauma, violence, and madness according to the game’s Steam page. While playing Of Bird and Cage you’ll solve puzzles and make quick decisions, and the game’s story offers multiple endings based upon the choices you make.

So, what’s the story itself about? The game’s Steam page offers a concise description that’ll help you decide whether the game is something you’d be comfortable playing. However, before we share the official description of the story, we want to include a disclaimer that some of the subject matter may be upsetting to some gamers.

At the bottom of the game’s Steam page, it also has a mature content warning due to mentions of alcohol, drugs, hallucinations, sexual themes, and violence, although the content warning notes nothing is explicit and there’s no nudity in the game.

“Dive into a dark, twisted game specifically tailored to its music. Let symphonic metal lead you through a two-hour-long story of trauma, violence, and madness based lightly on ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Play as Gitta Barbot, a 25 year-old drug addict, who tries to escape the physical and mental prison of her captor—Bres Lupus. Make quick choices that will have dire consequences and watch how your actions reveal new paths while struggling to keep your sanity.

You’re surrounded by violence at home and at work, engulfing every aspect of your life—what will you do? Will you take revenge or grant forgiveness? Ultimately, the choice is yours. Follow the twisted relationship between two characters, portrayed in a gut-wrenching way.

Happy endings don’t come easily here. In this first-person hybrid of a concept album and a game, your choices and actions will shape the narrative.”

Metal music often touches upon difficult subjects in its themes and lyrics, so hearing that Of Bird and Cage’s story will be dark and potentially disturbing isn’t exactly surprising.

In the event the story itself doesn’t appeal to you, but you’re intrigued by the music itself, you can look forward to hearing the following artists who’ve all contributed to the album for Of Bird and Cage…
