The most recent Sony State of Play had its fair share of surprises. The most unexpected announcement was for the Lunar Remastered Collection. The beloved JRPG series will finally see Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete remastered for modern consoles. Yes, another surprise followed the announcement after the State of Play: Lunar Remastered Collection will be available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Steam in addition to PlayStation 4 and 5.
The Lunar series is incredibly well-loved, but has a slightly rocky history. Lunar: The Silver Star and its sequel, Lunar: Eternal Blue, were originally released in the early 1990’s on the Sega CD in Japan. They were remade as Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for the PlayStation, and received English releases to boot. These games, featuring a charming 90’s anime aesthetic, have a strong fan following, but their spin-offs were not as well-received.
Fans have been hoping for a series comeback for a long time—since 2009, in fact, when Lunar: Silver Star Story was remade for the PSP. Asking for a Lunar announcement during video game presentations was a sort of JRPG equivalent to asking about Hollow Knight: Silksong. Lunar Remastered Collection seems like it will have been worth the wait: not only are the graphics brighter and, in some cases, redrawn from the original, but it also enhances the audio and adds quality of life improvements such as speeding up battles. On top of that, these changes are applied to the PlayStation versions of the two Lunar titles, the PlayStation versions generally being considered the best ones.
Another noteworthy point is that the Lunar Remastered Collection is also the first time Lunar 2: Eternal Blue has been remastered since the PlayStation port in 2000! Getting both Lunar 1 and 2 together in Spring 2025 is a fantastic feeling both for fans of the originals and for anyone interested in these historic JRPG classics. On top of that, with this announcement, we can officially say we got a Lunar series remaster before Grand Theft Auto VI, something most fans would have only dreamed about.
