It feels like fans have been waiting thousands of years for official news about the Nintendo Switch 2. In that time, leaks both real and fake have circulated the internet, with fans hoping for anything official. Today is finally that day, as Nintendo uploaded a “first look trailer” for the Nintendo Switch 2 without any fanfare whatsoever.
As would be expected from such a stealthy upload, the trailer doesn’t give us many concrete details. We can see that the Switch 2 will be notably bigger than its predecessor, and the kickstand will also be larger and can lay almost entirely flat. Possibly the most interesting change is that the joy-cons snap into the screen horizontally, rather than locking in vertically. This seems to make it easier to attach and separate the joy-cons compared to the process involved with the original Switch.
While Nintendo is typically known for embracing bright colors on its consoles, the launch Switch 2 shown in the trailer opts for a matte smoky black with only small pops of red and blue beneath the joysticks and in the joy-cons’ interior buttons that snap into the console. This may be to help differentiate the Switch 2 from the original Switch—we definitely don’t want another confusing Wii U situation to come about. It does help the Switch 2 look more like its own thing and less like another model like the Lite or OLED.
The trailer appears to confirm that there will be a Mario Kart game for the Switch 2, and that the Switch 2 will be able to play most original Switch games, both physical and digital. However, the Mario Kart game could just be a tech demo, but we remain hopeful.
The system is slated for release in 2025, and there will be a Nintendo Direct with “a closer look” on April 2, so it’s safe to say the console won’t release before then.
There will also be an “Experience Nintendo Switch 2” “hands-on event” held at different locations throughout the United States in April following the Nintendo Direct. The event will be held at Center415 in New York from April 4 to 6, at Television City in Los Angeles from April 11 to 13, and at the Embarcadero Building at Fair Park in Dallas from April 25 to 27. To attend, you must enter a raffle for tickets using your Nintendo Account on the official website.
It may be another long while without any Switch 2 news, but after what felt like an eternity of waiting for the announcement, the next three months leading up to the Nintendo Direct should go by in a flash.
