Apex Legends Adds New Penalty Feature For Players That Leave a Match Early

For those Apex Legends players out there that like to rage quit, you might want to re-think that.

Whether players leave in a fit of rage over a losing match or ill-fitting teammates, or those that leave because of poor connection issues, Apex Legends fans are going to want to be more present than ever in Respawn’s battle royale game because the studio has implementing a way to penalize those that make a habit out of prematurely exiting a match.

“So internally, we have been working on and testing this feature but it wasn’t our intention or plan to have it go live with the update that went out today. There was a piece of script that was missing and caused the leaving match early penalty to be turned on when it shouldn’t be. That’s why it wasn’t in the patch notes,” noted Respawn Community Manager ‘Jayfresh’ on a recent Reddit post after players were discovering a “Leaving Early” penalty when leaving a match before the game was done.

He added, “We updated the script, tested with QA and it’s now disabled for all platforms. We don’t have an ETA for if or when this would come out for real. Apologies for the confusion.”

So while this change was left out of the patch that went live earlier last week, it’s still a change that hopes to improve the quality of life in-game and hopefully this move will dissuade players from exiting quickly and hurting their squad. Since Apex Legends doesn’t offer an option to play solo at this time, the team dynamic is very important and it’s great to see Respawn take responsibility for imposing the 3-man squad choice on fans of the battle royale title.

Respawn followed up their original post by staying that the penalty wouldn’t affect the player if they were already dead and simply waiting for the timer to tick down. They didn’t address how they were going to handle uncontrollable disconnects, nor how it will work with the report feature if a player is faced with a volitile team, but it looks like it’s a work-in-progress, which means player feedback will be vital.

As for the game and its latest update, Apex Legends is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
