Among Us 2 Cancelled as Innersloth Commits to Original

Among Us 2 is dead. Long Live Among Us.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

You’ve heard of Among Us more than you need to at this point. The 2018 game that could has become a 2020 hit, shooting from a barely known mobile game to some of the most viral gaming of the year. Demand has clearly pushed Among Us to its humble limits, and the developers at Innersloth were preparing to make a sequel to make room for everything and everyone. But plans have changed, and it looks like Among Us will be getting an overhaul instead.

Innersloth updated its official blog over on indie gaming platform Itch.io, outlining the plans for Among Us’ bright future. According to the post, the original plan for creating Among Us 2 came about because of Among Us’ code base or framework was simply not built to support adding tons of new content. But it seems like the team realized that since Among Us is so popular right now, it would be worth the effort to make that the current platform instead of making a separate game as a sequel. So Among Us 2 is cancelled, and the team is going to make all that planned content happen in the first game.

The team has already admitted this is a more difficult choice in terms of work, so it’s very possible there will be more technical issues, roadblocks, or simply a longer wait time for the fans. That said, once everything works out, a ton of new features and improvements are planned. A few examples were provided, which we’re quoting here per that official blog post:

  • Servers. Forte is still working very hard to figure out our server issues. We don’t have an ETA but things should hopefully be getting better and better. This is taking up all development time on his end.
  • Colorblind support. It’s something we’ve put off for way too long… We plan on adding other identifiers for players as well as certain color focused tasks (Like wires). This should also open the potential for more colors. In the past we couldn’t add more colors because it became too difficult to tell players apart.
  • Friends/Account System. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time but just haven’t been able to tackle. For the health of the game going forward we’re going to sink our teeth in and figure it out! This one will definitely take some time.
  • A new stage! It is still very early and we have only just begun designing the layout. The theme has been settled on though! The next stage in Among Us is going to be a Henry Stickmin themed location!

Based on the plans it seems like that list is only the beginning. Among Us is clearly here to stay, and the choice the developers at Innersloth have made here is fascinating.
