Starfield: How Lockpicking works – How to use Digipicks

Whether or not you’re a sneaky rogue space pirate in Starfield, one thing you’ll need are Digipicks. Digipicks are the lockpicks of Starfield, and only the best loot is hidden behind locked safes and doors. If you find yourself always out of Digipicks like I am, here is your guide on how to buy and use them in Starfield.
How to farm Digipicks in Starfield
Digipicks can be hard to come by in Starfield if you don’t know where to look. During my first playthrough, I felt like I was always out of Digipicks. However, I learned from my mistakes and now I have plenty of Digipicks in my second playthrough. The first way to find a lot of Digipicks in Starfield is by scanning rooms and looting dead bodies.
Digipicks are available randomly in rooms. You can pull out your scanner to easily see what is lootable in a room, and this can help you find Digipicks faster. However, I usually just quickly walk around a room looking for Digipicks in lockers and on tables. It all comes down to RNG, but I’ve found plenty of digipicks just by being thorough.

The other way to find digipicks in Starfield is to find them on dead bodies. There are a lot of corpses in just about every building in Starfield, and you can usually find a Digipick or two on them. Also, always loot the enemies you kill to potentially get a few Digipicks. They’ll add up in time.
Where to buy Digipicks
The last way to get Digipicks really easily in Starfield is to buy them. Digipicks can be bought from any general vendor shop in the Settled Systems. Search in the Miscellaneous section and you should find a few for sale.
While exploring, we found that the best place to buy Digipicks in Starfield is at Jemison Mercantile, which is a general store in New Atlantis. You’re sure to find other general stores that sell Digipicks, all while you are looking for new crew members to recruit.
How to pick locks with Digipicks
The lockpicking mini-game can be challenging at first, but once you get it, it becomes a lot easier. You’ll see layers of rings on the lock, and on the right, different sets of rings with notches you can rotate. Select one at a time, and twist them around to see if they fit into the open slots. if you see an area where your notches fit, don’t slot them in just yet, it still may not be the right placement.
I recommend lining up every key before using any and then using them all at once to complete lock picking quickly without using a key in the wrong place. Line them all up so they can clear out all the rings, and voila! At first, I was really struggling to understand how this minigame works. But now, I’m a pro, and you’ll be one too after a few tries.
