Over the years, Travellers Tales perfected the design of Lego video games, starting with the classic Lego Star Wars titles and eventually working its way through Marvel Super Heroes, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. The developer also produced a series of memorable Batman-based adventures, from the original Lego Batman release to the much more expansive DC Super Heroes, which provided a bigger city to explore.
Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham expands the theme even further. In addition to exploring the city and battling criminals, you’ll also head into deep space, where Brainiac entered his bid to take over the world, with numerous henchmen and familiar foes helping him out. Batman will need as much assistance as he can get to save the day.
On that note, here are some beginner’s tips that will help you get started.
Always build things
There are puzzles scattered throughout Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham that will require you to build a Lego-based object in order to move forward. You’ll be able to spot what needs to be built when you see a stack of bricks that suddenly start jumping when you go near them.
Building is a cinch. Simply approach the pile so you’re close enough to it (or standing in it) and hold down the B or Circle button, depending on your version of the game. Your character will begin building, and in a matter of seconds you’ll have access to a new item, such as a switch or a costume station, where you can change into another suit.
A quick word of warning: if enemies are in the area, hold off on building your item until they’re defeated. Sometimes they’ll come at you in swarms, so if that’s the case, wait for the opportunity between their incoming waves and then build the object and move along. If you’re playing in a co-op session, your friend can help fend them off while you finish building.
Certain characters for different situations
Similar to previously released Lego games, Beyond Gotham may require certain heroes to get past obstacles. For instance, with gold blocks, you’ll require some form of laser in order to melt them, and not everyone has access to this piece of equipment.
However, the game will sometimes provide notifications as to which character is best for the job. In the case of the gold bricks, either Superman or Cyborg is an excellent choice, since they can shoot lasers.
Other scenarios require certain characters to open doors or activate switches, such as villains like the Joker and Killer Croc. If you don’t have them on hand for the time being, you can always revisit a level once they’re in your collection, head back to the door and open it. Sometimes you’ll find a nice bonus, such as an extra character or costume, so it never hurts to stop by.
Suits for every occasion
Since Batman and Robin are still the primary characters in this universe (even though the game has over 150 of them to choose from), they have all the wonderful toys necessary to complete levels. In this case, they come in the form of suits, which can be transformed into by placing your character at the change station and pressing a button.
Many of these suits help you with certain situations in a level. The Sensor Suit, for example, will help you detect hidden objects and walls that you can burst through to continue on your way. The Power Suit is useful for destroying objects, such as silver Lego bricks. Finally, once you get closer to Brainiac’s intergalactic territory, you can change into the Space Suit to fly around, or use a heat beam to deliver additional damage.
If you don’t see changing stations, look around. You’ll probably find a pile of bricks that let you to build your own, or it might be hidden out of the way in a normal level. That’s where exploring really comes in handy, as you might find something special – which will get you that much closer to completing it and reaping the gold bricks at the conclusion of a particular stage.
By all means, bring a friend
Finally, Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham features two-player co-op support, so a friend can jump in and help save the day. Although the game isn’t online multiplayer compatible, it works better locally, as you and your teammate can work together to defeat enemies, explore a level even quicker than you could on your own, and even work on puzzles that couldn’t be solved – and could unlock a bonus item to get you that much closer to finishing the level.
The split-screen effect from prior games is useful, as you don’t have to stay limited to the same area. A line divides where your characters are located, so you can see where you have to move if you feel like reuniting with them. You’ll both need to meet at the exit, so don’t be hesitant to join back up with your ally.
Remember, the Justice League was based on a team, so make it a team effort if you can!
