August is a month of packed releases, and the PlayStation 4 isn’t spared any of the excitement as a console. You may already have checked out our guide to this month’s Xbox game releases, but there are some heavy-hitters on the PlayStation front as well. While there’s a fair amount of crossover between the two, some Sony exclusives might pique your interest on this list of ours. Some PlayStation exclusives are present on the list of August game releases above, alongside anticipated series entires like Madden NFL 20 and Life is Strange 2. While these exclusives like Azur Lane: Crosswave are likely a little niche for the Western market, there are also the likes of Oninaki to keep JRPG stalwarts happy who haven’t quite shelled out for a Nintendo Switch yet. From Tokyo RPG Factory, the minds behind I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphere, Oninaki tells the tale of someone tasked with protecting Life from Death. If that sounds pretty heavy, that’s because it is; the demo didn’t shy away from the relatively dark themes of the game, and we’re excited to see where it takes its story.
For those who want something a little different, there’s always Tokyo Chronos. This is a mystery visual novel revolving around a bunch of friends trying to investigate a death. Produced by Kazuma Miki, the Producer of Sword Art Online, this highly stylized visual novel looks like a breath of fresh air for those wanting a respite from the recent action-adventure offerings that have populated the PlayStation store. The game has previously been available on Steam, but moving it to Sony’s flagship console is definitely a smart move considering how many other visual novels have found a forever home there.
The August game releases for PlayStation 4 have a great spread across various genres, which means that you should be able to find something that tickles your fancy.
