While not as popular today as they were in the 80s and 90s, video game cheat codes have a long and memorable history. Most NES fans have fond memories inputting the famous Konami code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A) to score 30 lives in Contra, while at the same time bouncing the koopa shell off the block in the original Super Mario Bros. for infinite 1-ups.
We posted a definitive list of the top 100 cheats and codes of all time. Then we noticed a fun post on Reddit asking the community to list their favorites. That said, here are some of the responses. In the meantime, let us know which cheats you love best.
Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 -Off With Their Heads!
Reddit user SquashySquished scored the first response with a nod to the excellent Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2. One particular cheat code, g_saberrealisticcombat, lets players dismember enemies in the game, which results in humorous scenes of Stormtroopers literally going to pieces.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – Flying Cars
Community member SnurreFisk chimed in with one of our personal favorites, flying cars in GTA San Andreas. On the PS2, enter square, down, L2, up, L1, circle, up, x, left. The future is now!
DOOM – All Weapons, Armor And Ammo
Doom’s monsters from hell put up a fight, but you’ll have a much better time with every weapon, piece of armor and bullet/form of ammo in the game. As Content_Monkey said, all you need to do is input IDKFA, then prepare for a bloody good time.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 – How To Get $10,000
If you’re desperate for cash while playing Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, this Reddit member suggests entering John D Rockefeller to make an easy $10,000.
Age of Mythology – How to get the Laser Bear
Werghat prefers to strike fear in his or her enemies, and suggests you enter O Canada while playing Age of Mythology to spawn a humongous laser-spewing bear. Skip ahead to 1:50 in the video to see this beast in action. Oh Canada, indeed.
Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire – Play as a Wampa or AT-ST
It’s been years since we fired up this N64 classic, and Yarfunkle hit us right in the feels with the always entertaining _Wampa_Stompa cheat that lets gamers run through Hoth as the Imperial walker or the ferocious monster.
Mortal Kombat for Sega Genesis – Blood Code
Growing up in the 90s, you were either Sega or Nintendo, Genesis or SNES. When Mortal Kombat came out for both consoles, neither version featured the intense gore from the arcade. Well, not exactly. Reddit member bustednugget reminds us to enter A, B, A, C, A, B, B to unlock all the blood and fatalities on Genesis.
Metroid for NES – Invincible and Unlimited Missiles
Red_AtNight gives Samus extra stopping power by entering the following password in classic NES Metroid: NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000. Not only is video game’s favorite bounty hunter invincible, but she also has unlimited missiles. Take that, Ridley!
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil – Unlock All Levels and Weapons
We’ll always remember this N64 first person shooter for having one of the greatest weapons in video game history, the cerebral bore. Unleash that sucker and watch it drill into enemy heads, resulting in a stream of blood erupting from their skulls. Best way to get it? Enter code BEWAREOBLIVIONISATHAND. Kudos to Kaeobais for the tip.
Sonic the Hedgehog – Level Select
As much as we love Green Hill Zone, there are plenty more stages to explore in the original Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis. Sure, you can beat the game from start to finish, but JZer86 has a much easier way. To access the level select feature, enter this code: Up, Down, Left, Right, Hold-A Press Start. Skip to the one minute mark in the video.
