Some of the new copyright policy changes at Twitch have been met with contention, confusion, and frustration. And for good reason. Music isn’t the only thing resulting in muted audio on streams.
Apparently, your audio can be muted for things like police sirens in a game and for just… speaking normally.
It’s understandable that Twitch would want to protect copyright holders when it comes to music, but things are clearly being taken too far.
To emphasize just how ridiculous the situation is on Twitch right now, we’ve put together a compilation of some of the wildest reasons for muted audio and some of the best responses to the issue.
Twitch Users Share Bogus Reasons for Muted Audio
You muted me for a police siren in Persona 5.
Should we turn off game sound effects too based on that advise then? >¦( pic.twitter.com/zZLY4ZFaQv

Muted audio over a police siren, damn.
Its very cool that I had a VOD get muted during Phasmophobia, no music or anything playing, but I guess us whispering at a ghost sounded a lot like some meditation spoken word album lmao. This rocks! pic.twitter.com/dMJLjwCmdf

When your whispering sounds like a “3D Chakra” meditation from someone named Debra Taylor.
Same happened with me. I was fighting the final boss of Dead Space and got muted for an unrelated death metal screamo song pic.twitter.com/AKF2vCgQrO

Dead Space boss or Abominable Putridity? To be fair, Abominable Putridity is a great name for a Dead Space boss.

Horror game or “Evening in a Country Cottage” for your relaxation and meditation?
I’ve had one of my VODs oddly muted due to God Eater 3’s opening, but this claim is clearly not STEREO FUTURE (the opening song) pic.twitter.com/tcOH37a7l8

God Eater 3 opening has “Dry Gusty and Whistling Wind” apparently.
So I took Twitch’s advice and muted the game audio!

How weird it looks to stream games without any audio in order to avoid getting muted by Twitch.
I got a VOD muted for SMW Castle music *today* – I guess I’m just *going to read through the SMW EULA in the manual* and *turn off the music in the SMW options menu*

Super Mario World should be fine, right? Wrong. Baby Koopa is crying. Muted.
I’m a simple streamer, if Twitch tells me to mute my in game audio, I will mute my in game audio. It’s not like I cannot make my own in game audio. Be able to adapt y’all !!!

Sometimes you have to take things into your own hands and make the sounds yourself.
I’ve started a #WoWClassic hardcore challenge today. Only music I’ve had on stream was ingame WoW music, played by the game itself.
Yet I’ve got “Muted audio” on the latest vod, apparently in Sen’Jin village.
I don’t think it’s working as intended @Twitch @TwitchSupport

WoW music will get you muted on Twitch.
@YamiltonJay has his audio muted because of a GRANDFATHER CLOCK SOUND EFFECT. This is unavoidable. pic.twitter.com/T5bXIjY35M

When the Uno card fits.
Imagine having to mute in-game music from titles such as Final Fantasy VII, Ori, Ghost of Tsushima.
I will f*cking fight you. https://t.co/cEzynA0d7q

They make a great point, music is key to many video games. Imagine the music in your favorite game muted.
1) That’s an awful solution that implies “It’s the creator’s problem, not ours.”
Most streamers don’t have extensive histories in copyright law, that’s why the Twitch’s legal/economic/professional relationships is your responsibility. You’re equipped for it, creators aren’t.

And we’re ending the article with this fantastic thread from Twitter user @SaiMorningstar who sums up everything wrong with Twitch’s new system perfectly.
