Steamworld Dig was all about digging holes before it was cool. This super fun title from Image & Form Games, which I’d never heard of before today, is free on Steam until 26 June.

I’ve already spent a good amount of time in the game, and I can honestly recommend it. It doesn’t do anything special, but it’s solid, fun, and bound to offer hours of entertainment.

The game is all about mining in an old, run-down town. You’ll mine ore, sell it, upgrade your kit, and repeat. It’s a tried and trusted formula, it’s fun, it’s addictive, and you really can’t go wrong.

There is also a range of tools and upgrades you can unlock as you progress, offering a decent amount of variation. You’ll find caves inside the mines as well, where you’ll often face tricky challenges in order to get the rewards. Enemies keep getting tougher as you go, so be sure to upgrade that armor!

But that’s not all. Its sequel is on sale, as well.

If you enjoy Steamworld Dig, grab its sequel for just over a dollar

The sequel is a lot of fun, too, and while I’ve only just started playing it, it follows a similar system. Mine, upgrade, repeat. You also unlock all sorts of different tools as you go.

This time, you’re looking for the main character from the first game, not just chasing riches. He has gone missing, and this provides a stronger hook for the sequel.

The mines are also more interesting in this one, with bigger obstacles dividing different sections and offering more of a challenge when navigating the mines.

Overall, I highly recommend these games, so grab them while they’re free. If you missed the free deal, however, they’re still worth picking up if you’re looking for fun games to pass some time.

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
