The Electronic Arts showcase for E3 2015 is in the books, and there were a lot of great games for players to get excited about, including EA’s final presentation, Star Wars™ Battlefront™. Gamers were treated to several minutes of never before seen gameplay footage, jam packed with everything from Imperial Walkers to Darth Vader. All of this served to take an already highly anticipated game and put it even further over the top.
If you weren’t able to catch the presentation yourself, or perhaps just want to watch it again for more Star Wars Battlefront goodness, we’ve got a recap (plus some video) of everything you need to know. When you’re done reading (or watching) you’ll wish it was November 17, 2015 already.
Star Wars Battlefront Gameplay
For anyone who has spent some time playing a couple of the other DICE developed games, such as Battlefield 4, a lot of what you see in the Star Wars Battlefront multiplayer gameplay from E3 will look familiar. The movement is similar, and the maps definitely have that large-scale DICE feel that gamers seem to love so much. What they might find to be missing, however, are the iron sights that people have come to expect from most first-person shooters. Some weapons will allow you to ADS (aim down sight) with a scope, but for the most part it will be hip-fire or bust. That feature had some fans nervous, but after seeing it in action we’re confident it won’t be an issue.
The infantry combat looked fast-paced and exciting, and what we saw were Snow Troopers taking on the Rebels. It wasn’t long before any resemblance to Battlefield 4 was mostly forgotten, with Walkers and an AT-AT roaming about, towering over the infantry who were fighting it out on the ground.
The best part was still to come, as the following few minutes of gameplay featured aerial combat between TIE Fighters and X-Wings, narrowly missing each other on strafing runs and partaking in epic chases through narrow canyons. There was even a tribute to the iconic scene from Empire Strikes Back that had a Snow Speeder wrapping a Towcable around the legs of an Imperial Walker to bring it down. We thought Star Wars Battlefront looked pretty cool when we were watching it play out via infantry combat, but it was on a whole new level once the TIE Fighters, X-Wings and Snow Speeders came into play. If it turns out anything like Battlefield 3 jet combat did, it will be a huge success and major selling point.
To wrap it all up with an irresistible bow, just after the five minute mark we were all treated to something that any Star Wars fan would be unable to resist, a Lightsaber battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. It went down right in the middle of the action, amongst the chaos of Snow Troopers, Rebels, Walkers, X-Wings, TIE Fighters, and everything else that DICE was able to pack into this action-packed gameplay demonstration.
Of course, reading about it is one thing, but to see it for yourself is a completely different experience. It’s still not the same as playing it, but that will have to wait until November 17, 2015. It’s the best we can offer you at the moment, but you can be sure we’ll jump all over any new information or gameplay footage the moment it’s released.
