RoboCop Rogue City Hits Historical Low on Steam and You Need to Play It

Yes, Peter Weller is in it.

Steam sales have lost a bit of their magic in recent years, maybe because our libraries are already overflowing or because the biggest games rarely get steep discounts anymore. That’s why, when a genuinely great title gets a serious price cut, it’s hard not to jump on it.

RoboCop: Rogue City from Teyon is currently 90% off on Steam, and it’s easily one of the most fun AA games I’ve played in a while. At this price, it’s practically a crime to pass it up.

I’ll Buy That for a Dollar! (And a Few More)

RoboCop: Rogue City is down to just $5 on Steam at the moment as part of the Steam Summer Sale. It also has regional pricing, so you could possibly get it for even less depending on where you are.

Teyon, the studio behind the game, put itself on the map with Terminator: Resistance, a fun but janky licensed title with a lot of neat ideas and a strong faithfulness to its universe. RoboCop: Rogue City is an even better effort from the studio, accurately transporting you to the crime-ridden streets of Detroit envisioned by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner.

It’s a competent shooter that conveys RoboCop’s brute force spectacularly. Enemies fly back when hit, the Auto 9 shreds everything in its path with pinpoint accuracy, and the environment reacts to the carnage of every gunfight. The destruction reminds me a lot of Stranglehold and F.E.A.R., but here, you’re a tank who doesn’t need cover. It’s gory, constantly entertaining, and pretty immersive.

When you aren’t shooting baddies and delivering justice, you’ll also use your detective skills to do some honest to God police work. Intentional or not, these sequences where you talk to low-lifes and regular NPCs are hilarious. The dialogue, delivery, and everything about how these conversations play out is never boring. You’ll find evidence, take on side quests, interact with your buddies at the precinct, interrogate criminal scum, and fulfill your duties as a police officer as a cybernetic organism. The RPG side here is light and never really gets in the way.

Finally, this game is gorgeous to look at. Sure, there’s some jank here and there, but the visuals are ridiculously good. The developers have used Unreal Engine 5 to faithfully capture the vibe of the films and the location itself. It’s full of detail, and some areas are straight-up photorealistic.

We don’t see a lot of good licensed games anymore, and I feel like a lot of studios have practically given up on the idea of them. Teyon hasn’t, and they’re already making a standalone expansion for the game called RoboCop: Rogue City – Unfinished Business, which is coming out next month.

For the price of a cup of coffee, RoboCop: Rogue City is a steal and a damn good time. Don’t trust me? There is also a demo available on Steam to convert you to the cause.

Ali has been writing about video games for the past six years and is always on the lookout for the next indie game to obsess over and recommend to everyone in sight. When he isn't spending an unhealthy amount of time in Slay the Spire, he's probably trying out yet another retro-shooter or playing Dark Souls for the 50th time.
