The first Lost in Random was a heavily underrated indie gem, and the next game in the series has now arrived. Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is a 3D top-down action roguelike that offers a lot of, well, randomness.

You play as Queen Aleksanda, and you find yourself trapped in the Black Die from which you must escape. You’ll meet plenty of familiar faces if you played the first one, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll love the Tim Burton-esque landscapes and character designs.

The card system has been overhauled, and in The Eternal Die, you can only hold one card at a time, which acts as a spell. The viewpoint has also changed, and honestly, it feels pretty good.

The combat is fluid and tons of fun. Your swings carry a satisfying amount of weight, often staggering enemies and interrupting their attacks. That is, of course, when you get your timing right. Speaking of timing, the dodge mechanic is very forgiving, offering a decent amount of invincibility frames. I’m a big fan of this, since you can miss your timing a little bit yet still avoid big damage.

Overall, the game does feel a tad easy, but the hope is that it will get more challenging as you progress. Each new floor and boss does pose some threat, but only until you memorize the attack patterns.

Finally, you also have a six-sided die you carry with you, named Fortune. You can toss fortune at enemies to deal damage based on the roll you get. It’s a really fun aspect. Your total arsenal consists of your card attack, basic attacks, charged attacks, and Fortune, so overall there’s a fair bit of variety. But all of this is impacted by your relics, as well.

You collect various relics as you go and place them on a board of sorts. When lined up, they offer additional buffs, as well. There’s plenty of strategy to apply to these relics. Will you grab a strength bonus from 3 relics, or wait until you can line up five for double the bonus?

Overall, it’s a great game. The combat is fast and responsive, the levels are beautifully designed, and it’s a blast to play. It’s been a while since we had an addictive action roguelike enter the market, and if you’re looking to scratch that itch, The Eternal Die may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

Lost in Random: The Eternal Die releases on June 17, 2025, and is set to cost just $22.49. For just over two dollars more, you can get the Premium edition at $24.64, which includes a digital artbook, cosmetics, soundtrack, and advanced access starting from June 13.

Either way, in the age of $60-$80 games, it’s quite the bargain.

As a lifetime gamer, I was around to enjoy the NES, witness the birth of the PS1, and live through the golden age that was the PS2. My favorite game (no doubt driven by nostalgia) is Final Fantasy VII, but I'm always on the lookout for my new favorite.
