So much potential here!

After getting my hands on Neverway’s prologue, I knew I was in for something special. Neverway’s art was made by the same pixel artist who worked on Celeste, and its score was made by Disasterpeace.

The game already has some icons attached to it, and combine that with its unique take on a farming sim, mixing in RPG elements like a deeper combat system and story-rich fantasy, and you have something truly interesting.

Neverway’s One Hour Prologue Was a Rollercoaster

While the prologue was very short, it already perfectly introduces the setting, centered on a spiraling, relatable protagonist, Fiona, and her journey into a nightmarish world. The tiny details that go into developing Fiona’s character are remarkable, throwing you into the middle of her stress-riddled life and letting you find bits and pieces of what’s going on through her email, interactions, and dialogue.

Even with how her day started, where the game forces you to just stay at home, being too lazy to explore, is all too relatable in today’s world. As you finally get out, you continue learning things about yourself – like the fact that you had someone special, don’t own much, and you were let go from your job.

You eventually start over on a farm, but fall into a nightmare reality on a train ride before anything happens, and you have to try keep your life from falling apart even more. In this world, you experience the RPG elements, a top-down, fast-paced combat with weapons, skills, and customizations.

Most of the prologue covers the tutorial of the combat system, and learning while expecting a cozy farming sim is both challenging and invigorating at the same time. The combat is quite difficult, as enemies swarm you really quickly, and you can basically die in a fraction of a second, similar to a dungeon roguelike. It feels like a fresh take on the genre, but the only problem is that the prologue was too short.

Neverway Instantly Gets You Hooked for the First Hour, Leaving You Wanting More

While Neverway’s prologue was fun, it didn’t include anything related to a farming sim. It ends as you get to your farm. I never got to experience the typical farming routine, apart from watering a single flower and trying to fish.

I honestly thought it would cover the whole gameplay loop, plus meeting other characters, tending to the farm, and teasing a few customization options. It left me wanting more, much like a cliffhanger in a jaw-dropping anime episode twist.

While it is still too early to tell whether the game is good, the ceiling for Neverway is definitely very high, brimming with potential. Neverway doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it is set to arrive sometime in 2026. Definitely a game to watch out for, and you can wishlist it on Steam right here.
