The Nintendo Switch combines console and handheld gaming in one convenient package, leaving some fans to wonder about the 3DS, but don’t worry. This feature lists some upcoming 3DS games in 2017 that we can’t wait to play. Admittedly it’s a short list, but we might see more titles come out over the course of the year.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (January 20)
We hope you finished Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, because Nintendo and Square Enix have even more DQ lined up for 2017. Journey of the Cursed King is a port of the critically acclaimed PS2 adventure that debuted all the way back in 2005. The core game remains intact, complete with the cell shaded graphics, but there some cool 3DS enhancements.
First, no random battles! You’ll see monsters and then choose whether to fight or avoid these creatures. Second, you have the ability to speed up the battle animations so you can resume exploring. Two small additions that should improve what should be one of the best handheld games of the year.
Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World (February 3)
There’s a good chance that you beat Yoshi’s Woolly World for the Wii U, but are not sure whether to replay it on the 3DS. Well, we have a good feeling that exclusive content will pull you back into this beautiful platformer. Nintendo fit all of the original levels into the 3DS version, then created stages featuring Poochy, and it gets even better. These exclusive levels have their own collectibles to track down, along with Poochy Pups that help you find secrets strewn throughout the game world. Throw in 30 animated stop motion shorts starring Yoshi and Poochy, and this version of Woolly World seems like a great companion to the console edition.
Ever Oasis (release TBA)
An action RPG inspired by Egyptian culture and mythology… from the same developers behind The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D? Um, yes please! Ever Oasis whisks you off to a desert, where it’s your mission to create a beautiful oasis while at the same time battling an enemy referred to as Chaos. Throughout the game, you’ll collect items to make products at shops, recruit villagers and then defeat adversaries in real-time combat. We don’t have an exact release date, but Ever Oasis is without question one of the coolest looking 3DS games coming out in the New Year.
