NetherRealm’s latest iteration of the gore-filled Mortal Kombat fighting series is soon to arrive, and many potential buyers are wondering if the game will have cross-platform support. Whether you’re a PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One or PC player, in this article we’ll take you through everything we know so far about if Mortal Kombat 11 will have cross-platform support.
A number of rumors have circulated regarding cross-platform play with MK11, but there’s yet to be any official word on the matter. Crossplay is something that few games offer, but recently it’s become a more common topic thanks to the likes of Fortnite combining player pools on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. While it’s never a guarantee, it’s certainly something closer to the forefront of game developers’ minds, though at the end of the day the decision is down to the platform owners like Microsoft and Sony.
While cross-platform support has yet to be announced, it’s definitely on NetherRealm’s radar. Speaking with wccftech back in January, the studio wasn’t ready to discuss details, but said that cross-platform support was something they were looking into and hoped would happen. It seems likely that Mortal Kombat 11 won’t launch with cross-platform support, but it could be added to the game in future if NetherRealm gets their way.
If cross-platform support does make it into Mortal Kombat 11, the real question is which platforms will be brought together. Sony has typically been cagey about allowing crossplay with their direct competitors, but Fortnite has managed to breach that divide. The most likely options are PC and Xbox One, and PS4 and PC. Whether the weaker Switch will be kept separate to the others is another dilemma, as the game may run differently on Nintendo’s system, meaning one platform could have an advantage.
If you’re interested in picking up Mortal Kombat 11 when it launches on April 23, cross-platform support probably shouldn’t be one of your deciding factors in the purchase, as it’s unlikely to be in the game when it first arrives. We’re hopeful that it’ll make it to MK11 in future though, combining the player bases on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Switch.
