New LEGO Batman Game Once Again Skips Online Co-Op

Not again.

TT Games is back with another Batman title, this time with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, an open-world title featuring several allies from the Bat Family. It’s far more ambitious than previous entries, but some things never seem to change – particularly how the studio handles co-op.

Unfortunately, despite supporting cooperative play, TT Games has confirmed that, like every other title from the studio, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight does not feature online play at all.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Has No Online Co-op

As mentioned in their detailed support FAQ, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight can be played entirely in two-player local co-op, but there is no support for online multiplayer.

Here is the relevant extract from the FAQ:

Will LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight have online co-op gameplay?

Fans of all generations will be able to enjoy the game solo or team up with a friend or family member through two-player local couch cooperative gameplay only. Online co-op will not be available.

So, if you were planning to buy this to play with a friend online, you may want to reconsider and plan a local session instead. The only upside to this disclaimer is that you do not need an online connection to play LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which at least avoids some annoyance.

Another positive confirmed in the FAQ is that the game will not feature any microtransactions for real money. This also means you will not need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass Core subscription to enjoy co op.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Confirmed Playable Characters

Apart from Batman, the following characters are confirmed to be playable to aid his crusade against Gotham’s villainy:

  • Robin
  • Nightwing
  • Batgirl
  • Jim Gordon
  • Catwoman
  • Talia al Ghu

Each playable character has unique skills, dedicated progression trees, and their own gadgets and combos. Robin has a line launcher, Nightwing wields the battle staff, Batgirl uses a hackarang, Jim Gordon wields a foam sprayer, and Catwoman’s whip is showcased in the new trailer.

I’m honestly a bit stumped as to why TT Games refuses to implement online co-op when so many players enjoy their games in co-op. Being restricted to the same screen isn’t exactly feasible for many, especially in an open-world adventure that will likely be longer than their previous releases and require multiple sessions.

I really hope TT Games reconsiders their stance on online play for future titles or adds it to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight in a future update.
