In GTA Online, one of the most expensive properties you can purchase is your own personal hangar. The cheapest one goes for $1.2 million, which puts it out of reach of all but the most dedicated GTA Online players.
That raises the question of whether it’s worth it in the first place, and what owning your own hangar can do for you. Here’s what you need to know about becoming an aircraft baron in the GTA Online world.
The Hangars
Hangars were added as an available property in the August 2017 Smuggler’s Run update to GTA Online. You can buy one from Maze Bank of Los Santos via the Internet app on your phone, just as with clubhouses or bunkers.
Just as with real-life aircraft, hangar ownership opens the door to a lot of very expensive hobbyist options; unlike real life, however, GTA Online will now let you buy your own personal fighter jets. Buying a hangar isn’t a spend-money-to-make-money sort of deal, but it does open up some new ways to play the game, as well as a couple of tangible quality-of-life bonuses.
There are five hangars available for sale on the map: two are at Los Santos International Airport on the northeast side of the city, and three are at Fort Zancudo. Aside from their actual map location, there are no effective differences between the hangars. Each one can store up to 20 aircraft at once, although the larger the vehicles you have in storage, the less can fit on the hangar floor for display purposes. Extra aircraft will be moved into the storage area at the back of the hangar.
The Airport hangars are significantly cheaper than the ones at Fort Zancudo, at $1.2 and $1.525 million, respectively. If you’re just looking for someplace relatively humble to store your planes and start the Air Freight Cargo missions, you’re better off with an Airport hangar.
What makes the Fort Zancudo hangars attractive, despite nearly double the price as the Airport hangars ($2.65 million, $2.085 million, and $3.25 million, respectively, as well as the subtle indication that you’ve just contributed to funding a blacksite), is that owning one grants you low-level access to the base.
You can now simply drive into Fort Zancudo without automatically incurring a wanted level, as can anyone who’s a member of an organization or gang that you run. If you’re looking to run in and steal a couple of fighter jets for the sheer hell of it, owning a Fort Zancudo hangar makes that significantly easier.
Other perks of hangar ownership include getting a free Cuban 800 light twin-engine plane with purchase, as well as access to a Homing Launcher, Heavy Sniper, and Parachute found inside the hangar. You can also convert any Pegasus aircraft you own into a Personal Aircraft, which can be resprayed and summoned from the Interaction Menu. A Personal Aircraft is insured by Mors Mutual, and can be reclaimed when destroyed for a $1,000 deductible.
Maybe most importantly, there are a number of aircraft in the game that you can’t buy unless you have a hangar to put them in, such as the Pyro and Rogue. If you’re looking to do some casual dogfighting in GTA Online, you need a hangar to put them in, or Warstock won’t sell these planes to you at all.
GTA Online players, what did you end up doing with your first fighter jet? Never mind; we’re pretty sure it was random mayhem. Tell us anyway via our official Twitter, @PrimaGames.
