Who knew Cyberpunk 2077 circa the 90s would look so good! Someone re-imagined CD Projekt RED’s upcoming open-world RPG title as a PS1 game and even though graphics back then were hit or miss, it actually works together in a really lovely way! That, or my nostalgia is talking.
YouTuber Bearly Regal is no stranger to demastering popular games and that’s exactly what he did with Night City and the world of Cyberpunk 2077 in his latest video. The below video teases what the criminal undergrounds would look like in lower graphics of the 90s and even though it’s a “demaster,” it looks really stunning and very on-brand for the Cyberpunk name.
“Take a mini tour of Night City from Cyberpunk 2077 re-imagined as a PS1 game,” boasts the video’s official description from the creator. “The project is far from finished but I wanted to share a small update that teases some of the tech I’ve developed for the demo.”
From walking the streets, to seeing familiar vendors from the E3 demo, the deconstruction of the hyper-realism that this gen offers is an interesting way to relate present-day gaming to that of many of our roots. It’s also a nice break to sit back and enjoy a fan-created project – not everything has to be patch notes and disappointing microtransaction trends.
As for the game itself, CD Projekt RED’s brand new IP officially arrives on April 16th, 2020. For more about the game:
“Cyberpunk 2077 is a narrative-driven, open world RPG set in the most vibrant and dangerous metropolis of the future — Night City. You play as V, a hired gun on the rise, who just got their first serious contract. In a world of cyber-enhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate life-hackers, today is your first step to becoming an urban legend.”
