Troy Baker Won’t Be Reprising His Role In Borderlands 3, And He’s Not Happy About It

While the announcement trailer for Borderlands 3 confirmed a lot of familiar faces making their return, it seems that not all of the voice actors will be coming back alongside their in-game counterparts. Troy Baker, who voiced the hilarious protagonist in Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands title, is confirmed to be sitting the third game out even as his character made an appearance sporting a very villain-y mustache.

For those that didn’t play the Telltale game (which you should, it’s incredible), Rhys is the CEO of Atlas and in the game, he was the dorky good guy just trying to do the best with what he had. He later became a very unwilling host to that of Handsome Jack, a side to him we saw his brief reappearance in the Borderlands 3 trailer.

Baker confirmed that he wasn’t going to be taking on the role of Rhys once more in the third game during a Q&A in Melbourne, Australia, and he wasn’t shy about letting Gearbox know that he wasn’t exactly thrilled about the exclusion.

“If Gearbox decides that they’ll let me do it, that’ll be awesome,” said Baker after breaking the news to fans about his involvement. “I have no idea. There was a possibility that I was gonna be in it, then I saw that epic, epic trailer, and everyone’s like ‘oh my god, there’s Rhys!’ And I went, ‘well, there we go.'”

“I’ve never done this before, but I would love for Gearbox to know that it’s not about me, it’s about that character,” Baker continued, saying that “if they’re going to bring back characters from Telltale Borderlands, it should be the people that originated the characters.”

He then added that he didn’t want to call Gearbox out per se, though his disappointment was undeniable. Luckily for fans of the iconic voice actor, he’s got plenty of incredible projects on the horizon including that of Death Stranding and the highly anticipated Last of Us Part 2.
