The Year of 2018 has seen its fair share of great games. Even some indie games rose to challenge some obvious big hitters for game of the year. In this article, we are listing those games which every gamer ought to seriously think about playing, if they haven’t already. Here are the top 5 best games of 2018.

God of War

Here is a masterpiece to behold. A game that balances emotional depth with bloody action. There is a reason this game has won so many Game of the Year awards. Every gamer knows the God of War franchise, and everyone knows it needed a reboot. And what a reboot we got!

God of War continues the story of Kratos, taking place after Kratos’s ventures slaying the Greek pantheon. However, this time around, he isn’t a lone god-killer. With his son, Atreus, they embark on a journey through a world littered with Norse gods, creatures, friend and foe alike. This game packs a punch, giving us visceral fight sequences that will surely have a lasting effect on your memories. The story touches on themes of love, loss, family, and redemption, with the fast-paced action the franchise is known for. Do yourself a favor and embark with Kratos and Atreus on a journey like none other in gaming this year. God of War is available exclusively on PlayStation 4.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar is at it again. Red Dead Redemption to is one of those games you can easily get lost in. Literally! In Red Dead Redemption 2 you primarily play as Van Der Linde gang member, Arthur Morgan. The open world is huge and there is no dearth of activities to engage in. You’ll be playing it for days and days. If you’ve ever wanted to wander as a cowboy in the wild West, Red Dead Redemption 2 may just be the game for you. Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for Xbox one and PlayStation 4.

If being a cowboy isn’t quite your thing (are you an alien?), then perhaps being Spider-man tickles your spidey-sense? Sony’s exclusive, Spider-Man, may be the best path to doing just that. As Spider-man, you are let loose on New York City where you can engage in whatever you like. There are plenty of things to do, as the open world is laced with web-slinging fun. Swinging from building to building, dispatching criminals, hanging them up to dry, all makes for one exhilarating, adrenaline fueled good time. You’ll meet a host of familiar villains and be given a diverse range of abilities to take them down with. PlayStation 4’s Spider-Man should do the trick.

One of the best Indie games of the year is Celeste. Yes, this 2D platformer where you play as Madeline, a girl who attempts to reach the top of a mountain, avoiding traps, overcoming obstacles, and performing air-defying feats, is so good that it gave Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War a run for game of the year. It achieved this thanks to its addictive yet challenging gameplay. The game is a series of level climbing up a mountain. You must master the many mechanics necessary to finish through these challenging levels. However, Celeste is not all about difficulty. There is a deep, rich story about self-discovery, depression, and anger hidden beneath the challenges. It’s not something you see everyday, especially when it comes to platformers. For those interested, come January, Xbox One will have Celeste as one of their free games with Gold. Celeste is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch.

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate

What can we say? It’s already hard not to like all of the Smash Brothers games. And this time around, Nintendo hasn’t made it any easier. Hosting a range of new quality of life mechanics, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also packing every single character in previous Super Smash games. That’s a total of 63 known characters, plus 11 more new ones, making a grand total of 74 playable characters. It’s every Nintendo fan’s dream. The game also has brand new game modes like Smashdown, Squad Strike, and Tournament, which allows up to 32 players to compete in tournament brackets. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is truly the ultimate game to sit down and play with your friends. Returning are those sleepless nights on the couch duking it up to see who is the best.
