Forget about swords. The weaponry in the latest Assassin’s Creed had an Industrial Revolution upgrade. Find out what you’ll wield on the streets of old London town.

Time marches on, especially in the world of Assassin’s Creed. Between the original game and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, nearly 700 years have passed; this one’s set in 1868, and the world has changed enormously since those twelfth century romps. The Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution have made their mark, and the march of technology is getting ever-faster.

While the order of Assassins may be ancient, that doesn’t mean it won’t move with the times, and so your weapons in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate have been updated to take advantage of everything the Victorian age has to offer. A big sword simply won’t cut it any more, so here’s what the smart assassin about London town is packing in 1868.

Assassin’s Gauntlet

It wouldn’t be Assassin’s Creed without your trusty Assassin’s gauntlet on your hand, and it’s had quite a technical upgrade since Assassin’s Creed Unity. Naturally it’s great for delivering a knockout punch (and for a devastating one-two, you have a set of brass knuckles on your other hand), but there’s more to this giant glove than simply smacking people around.

Rope Launcher

The best addition to your new and improved gauntlet is the rope launcher. Instead of having to laboriously climb up tall buildings, with your rope launcher you can simply hook onto rooftops and nip up walls in seconds. It also makes getting across London much easier, as you can use it to zip-line between buildings; essential since the city’s wide, traffic-ridden streets are impossible to leap across.

Hidden Blade

Of course your gauntlet wouldn’t be complete without a hidden blade, the essential tool for up close and personal kills, but it also features a new toy that’s even more useful for anyone in the assassinating business, a poison dart gun that you can use to take down victims at a safe distance.

Cane

By the mid-nineteenth century, it’s simply not smart to wander around town with a massive sword strapped to your belt, particularly since you won’t have room to swing it down some of London’s less salubrious alleyways. Instead, equip yourself with a handy cane. It makes for a stout walking stick, it’s perfect for hitting people with and if you find yourself in a really tight spot, it contains a hidden sword.

Kukri

The preferred weapon of those fearless Nepalese soldiers, the Gurkhas, the kukri is a vicious curved knife. Unlike curved blades such a scimitar, whose main cutting edge is on the outside, the kukri – thought to be based on the sickle – has its cutting edge on its inner curve, making it ideal for hacking great chunks from your enemies.

Pistol

The nineteenth century was a time of enormous technological advancements, and firearms are a great illustration of how quickly things moved on. At the beginning of the century handguns were single-shot efforts such as flintlocks and muskets. By the time of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, faster and more accurate revolvers were commonplace. You can use one, but it’s far too noisy to be a perfect assassin’s tool.

Voltaic Bomb

Another great development of the Victorian age was the use of electricity. It was far from widespread in 1868, but those inventive Victorians were coming up with all sorts of uses for it, and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s voltaic bomb is just the sort of thing we can imagine some industrious nineteenth century scientist conjuring in his laboratory.

Throwing Knives

Let’s not forget there’s a second playable character in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate: Jacob Frye’s twin sister, Evie. While she’s just as skilled an assassin as her brother, she adopts a more stealthy approach and has perfected the swift and silent strike, and her throwing knives enable her to get the job done without alerting nearby henchmen.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate officially launches on PC November 19. For a limited time, you can pick up either Assassin’s Creed Syndicate or Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege on PC for free when you buy an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 or 970 GPU, or 970M or above notebook. Find out more here.
