Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – An Epic RPG Experience

by Bryan Dawson

Assassin’s Creed is one of the longest running and biggest Ubisoft franchises. There have been a number of installments to the series, and while they all offer a similar gameplay experience, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is looking to expand the franchise by adding on to a solid foundation. We played through the first eight hours of the game and have returned to report on how this could be the best Assassin’s Creed yet. So sit back and relax as we take you through our Assassin’s Creed Odyssey preview and hands-on experience.

If you’ve played previous Assassin’s Creed games, you should have a very good idea of the basic gameplay you’ll find in Odyssey. While the initial reveal of the game had a few fans worried, rest assured this is the Assassin’s Creed you know and love. The combat system has advanced somewhat since the last few entries in the series, but Odyssey offers a natural progression of the franchise. Veterans of the series will have no problem jumping right in and feeling at home in Odyssey.

RPG Elements

What really allows Odyssey to take a step into the future (or past if you will) is the addition of an RPG-like experience layered over the tradition Assassin’s Creed gameplay that fans have come to expect from the series. Leveling, story dialogue, side quests and more all feel like an RPG more so than in previous Assassin’s Creed titles.

What’s even more impressive is the ability to explore in Odyssey. While early in the game you will be somewhat limited in the areas you can travel to (although still offering a large area to explore), there are plenty of side quests and battles you probably shouldn’t participate in, but you’ll have the option to if you wish to challenge yourself.

One example is a cave very early in the game that’s easy to reach at level one. If you accept the side quest in this cave and continue to follow that quest line, very quickly you’ll come across enemies that are level four and above. While the combat system allows a very skilled player to deal with these enemies, two or three hits and you’ll be down for the count. It’s very similar to stumbling into an area you shouldn’t be in during the early part of an RPG.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Choices

Choice Matters

A big push in Odyssey is choice. You have plenty of opportunity to choose in many aspects of the game. At the onset you choose if you wish to play as the male or female protagonist. Both offer the same story and missions, but their personalities differ. You won’t be able to change your character once you select, so many sure you choose wisely. Of course you’re free to start over with the other character if you so choose.

There are a ton of dialogue options as you speak with NPCs during quests. The choices you make may impact events that happen in the future. This also goes for choices you make throughout the game, not just in dialogue. For example, if you encounter a family in trouble early in the game, and decide to save them, that family may cause you trouble down the line. In addition, if you take out an important figure before a battle, they may not appear in a future battle.

Some choices have a big impact, while others don’t mean as much. However, you can mold the personality of your character with many of the choices. Being nice isn’t always the best way to go, just as being mean won’t always get you the best results either. Play the way you like, but there’s no single right or wrong choice to make.
