Our amiibo collection began innocently enough. Nintendo sent us Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, along with the Mario amiibo so we could level up the character and teach it all of our bad habits. We admired the detail, particularly the intensity of the fireball captured in his overalls, but we didn’t think much of it. There was a time when we figuratively swam in Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures. The last thing we needed was another toy line to collect.
Ten amiibo later and we’re obsessed. Some of us drive to big box stores like crazy people, desperately searching for new releases. We also lurk on the r/amiibo subreddit and constantly refresh the screen hoping for new location info for Captain Falcon and Pit. We even considered buying amiibo from Amazon Germany because the website has the holy trinity in stock.
Holy trinity, you ask? What a silly name! Obviously we refer to Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, yes?
Nope, it’s Marth, Animal Crossing Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer, all of which are near impossible to find in the U.S. without paying at least double on eBay.
Yes we’re frustrated, because Luigi is available right now and Captain Falcon is missing in action, and why did Nintendo split wave 2 into two different shipments anyway? Supply problems? Shipping issues? To drive us crazy? Yes, yes and probably not.
Here’s the thing, if you found this amiibo guide there’s a good chance you’re as stressed as we are, or just the slightest bit curious. That said, here’s what you need to know about the different waves of amiibo, along with articles covering what is limited and where you can pre-order.
Wave 1 amiibo consists of Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus Aran, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu, Kirby and Marth.
Common Wave 1 amiibo: Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Pikachu and Kirby. You should have no trouble getting these guys.
Hard to find Wave 1 amiibo: Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer. Best advice, check Nintendo World in NYC if you’re in the Big Apple.
Getting harder: Fox and Samus Aran. We see less and less of these Nintendo heroes. Not a good sign.
Wave 2 amiibo is comprised of Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Captain Falcon and Pit.
Common Wave 2 amiibo include Zelda and Luigi. Diddy Kong and Little Mac are tough to track down, while Pit and Captain Falcon should release December 30, and may even debut this week at select stores like Toys R Us.
The wave 3 amiibo lineup includes Bowser, Toon Link, Sheik, King Dedede, Ike, Sonic and Mega Man. These are the amiibo you’ll be able to find in different stores throughout the U.S.
In addition, there are the following store exclusive amiibo: Shulk (GameStop), Lucario (Toys R Us), Meta Knight (Best Buy) and Rosalina (Target).
Pit, Captain Falcon and even Peach made the list!
Behold, the holy trinity. If you see any of these amiibo in stores, the heavens smiled upon you.
This is your best shot to find Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer.
Check out Shulk, Rosalina and the other figures.
Online is the quickest way to reserve amiibo, but there’s a good chance you can do so at Toys R Us stores if you act fast.
You just bought some amiibo. Now it’s time to put them to work!
Wait until you see this person’s Metal Mario.
Don’t forget to check f.y.e. stores!
