A couple of weeks ago Sony introduced one of its big “killer titles” for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale, a game that works in the very same spirit as Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. games but involving everything from the PlayStation universe. It works on a certain level but many folks are wondering if it’s just a knock-off or a serious contender that’s meant to make an impact in the fighting regime.
We’ve got a few suggestions as to what Sony can do in regards to making PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale the fighting contender that it deserves to be. Obviously it’s built in the same style as the Smash Bros. games but now is the time to deter a difference and make it stand out in its own right!
Take It On a Fighting Tour
This may sound like an absurd idea, but think about it. Advertising a game by taking it on the open road and showing everyone what it’s all about with something like a nationwide mall tour is a great way to show fighting gamers across the country that All Stars is legit.
Sony launching a nationwide PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale nationwide tour could spread the word about the title in a great viral way amongst experienced and novice players alike, letting everyone know what kind of skills are needed to get started with the game and, more importantly, what skills you need to master it!
Hit the Fighting Circuit
A great way to get All Stars some fighting cred is to go right to the source of many gaming tournaments by working with the MLG fighting circuits as well as LAN centers that thrive on multiplayer battles. Along the same lines as the nationwide tours, Sony could easily promote a push to get the fighting community more involved with the game, whether it’s holding tournaments to see who’s the best of the best or just holding a few beat-em-ups to get the experts into the gameplay mechanics before the game comes out. If Sony could wrangle fighting experts at Superbot Entertainment to develop the game, why couldn’t they get the proper fighting audience to appreciate it?
Make a Big Show At E3, and Reveal More of the Roster
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo less than a month away from happening in Los Angeles, this is a huge opportunity for Sony to show what PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is made of. This will no doubt be one of the company’s bigger titles for the holiday season, so they need to promote the living hell out of the game on the show floor.
We’re talking multiple playable kiosks, tournaments for bonus prizes, several character reveals and more to show that Sony is serious about fighting. Players would no doubt get excited to learn that the likes of Cole McGrath from Infamous, Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series, Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter would be involved. How about the return of the rabbit robot Robbit from Jumping Flash?
Sony needs to show that it means business at E3, and All Stars can go a long way of proving that theory even if that means stealing the spotlight from other franchises like Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time and the recently announced God of War: Ascension. We’re sure there’s more than enough love to go around.
Make Online Play a Factor
As great as Super Smash Bros. games are in terms of local play, everyone knows that a key ingredient to the success, as far as Brawl proved on the Wii, is online multiplayer. Though Sony didn’t announce that PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale was online compatible at its recent press event, they need to confirm it soon – and E3 seems like the most likely place.
A game like this thrives on its unpredictable rivalries, and what better place to find them than through random fights on PSN where players can meet up and simply beat each other senseless without having to worry about rankings or skill sets. Local play is always fun, don’t get us wrong, but it’s online that the game’s replayability is likely to shine. Sony, don’t let us down.
Throw In a Few Surprises
Finally, the main ingredient to PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale that will make it stand out is genuine surprise. Look at what Super Smash Bros. fans thought when Solid Snake was asked to join the line-up, cardboard box and all.
Sony needs to think outside the lines in the same regard, asking Activision if they can use Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot for old school purposes, or even wondering if Capcom can lend a hand with a Monster Hunter or Asura just to keep things fresh. First-party characters are great, don’t get us wrong, but throwing in a few third-party surprises would assure not only creativity for a game such as this, but also solid third-party support for the PlayStation 3 in general. It’s a win-win.
Sony just needs to show PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a legitimate threat in the fighting arena, and there’s no better way to do that than by getting fighting gamers amped about the new release by following our tips!
