Jim Boone, Red Faction: Armageddon’s developer has said when speaking to Eurogamer that the game is indeed influenced by Dead Space.

“Oh yeah, definitely, that’s a big one,” Boone said when quizzed on Dead Space’s impact on the team’s writing. “We’re big fans of the game – just loved the game to death, and we’ll play the second one.

“We talked about parallels. We’re saying the aliens have gotten loose, they’ve gone through and just killed everything… In some ways it was almost accidental. I don’t know how else we could have done this world other than to make it look very horrific and bloody, because if it happened in our world it would be pretty horrific and bloody.”

Red Faction: Armageddon is set to be significantly different to its predecessor Guerilla in a number of ways. The adventure is much more linear, is largely in underground locations, and has a different enemy; this time it’s an alien race.

Though there are comparisons between the game and Dead Space, the developers are insisting it’s rather different seems as crazy weaponry and that signature environment destructibility (GeoMod) are still major gameplay focuses.

“We tried to get a little bit of that vibe into it,” Boone said in reference to the scarier elements of Dead Space. “We don’t go too over into it. We talked about it early on – like how horror-centric do we want it to be, and we don’t want it to be too horror-centric. We want the flavor of certain scenes to be very horrific, to reinforce it.”

Storyline is also set to be a major factor in the new game, and will be worked into the missions dynamically. A very linear fashion has been chosen in order to keep up a constant level of excitement rather than requiring players to trek across boring terrain without much going on.

There’s even set to be a small level of interaction between the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network release that ties into the series, Red Faction: Battlegrounds. There’ll be certain bonuses for those who own the Battlegrounds game when they get to playing Armageddon.

“What we’re doing is we’re giving two full upgrades based on how far into Battlegrounds you’ve played,” Boone stated. “Say you get Battlegrounds first and play through it, right off the bat when you start Armageddon you’ll immediately be awarded two upgrades when you get to the first upgrade station.”

Those who have finished Battlegrounds will also be treated to a unique weapon. “I won’t tell you what it is, but there will be a specific weapon you’ll only get by having completed Battlegrounds. It’ll appear in the weapon locker.”
