Today, Blizzard announced it would be delaying the newest World of Warcraft expansion Shadowlands. Slated initially for October 27, the expansion was set to enter in the next era of WoW.

The new release date for World of Warcraft Shadowlands is unknown as the developers are still figuring out how much time they will need. We do know that Shadowlands will still be launching this year, but later than expected.

It could become a December release much like one of the past expansions, “Cataclysm,” but we’re uncertain.

In a statement, which can be read below, Blizzard talks about some of the hurdles causing the delay.

“As everything started coming together and we’ve been listening to and building upon your feedback, it’s become clear we need a little more time for additional polish, and to balance and iterate on some interlocking piece, particularly though related to the endgame.”

It’s not all bad news, though! Beginning on October 13, players will be able to download the pre-patch for Shadowlands. This patch will lay the groundwork for what’s to come when Shadowlands does launch later this year.

There will also be a pre-launch event in the run-up to Shadowlands in which you’ll be called upon to defend Azeroth against the Scourge.

Delays happen, especially in the year 2020, as everyone transitioned to working from home and figuring out exactly how to do so. World of Warcraft fans will have to wait a bit longer to enter the Shadowlands, but it sounds like the delay will ultimately result in a better product.

Blizzard needs to get Shadowlands right because the previous expansion, Battle for Azeroth, has left many players pretty down on the game’s current state. Shadowlands is set to be the most intricate expansion to date, so we’re hopeful that it brings an excellent endgame loop and exciting story into the world.
