PlayStation Plus Collection: What We Know So Far

PS Game Pass? Not Quite.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

One of the more fascinating parts of Sony’s PlayStation 5 Showcase was the announcement of a new PlayStation Plus benefit. It’s called PlayStation Plus Collection, and it seems like it’s meant to be a competitor to Xbox Game Pass. But at the same time, it seems like it has a totally different goal, or structure. So it’s far from a 1:1 comparison. But then, what is it? Here’s everything we know so far about the PlayStation Plus Collection.

All Confirmed PlayStation Plus Collection Games List

In the video package and during the showcase, Sony did confirm this is associated with PlayStation Plus members, if the title didn’t convince you. So there’s no extra charge. There’s also some interesting language in the trailer stating that the entire library will be available at launch for the PlayStation 5. To me that says this is a static library, but considering the presence of third-party games we don’t want to consider that set in stone. But that’s definitely on the table.

Ultimately, this isn’t something like Xbox Game Pass, that gives you new first party games at launch, and rotates other games in and out on a regular basis. This is a smaller service, more about giving players access to some of the most popular “generation defining” releases from the PlayStation 4. And if you look at the list of games, it’s pretty apparent that’s exactly the goal here. Check out the list, as confirmed in the trailer.

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • God of War
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Monster Hunter World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Persona 5
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • Until Dawn

Beyond this, we don’t really know. These are certainly some of the most popular, or well-received games of the last generation. It’s clearly heavy on first party games from Sony studios, although it isn’t every single one of them. We don’t know at this time if this list will change as time goes by, or if more games will be added. But we do know that, per a quote from Sony’s Jim Ryan, PS5 games will not be included. A blog post laying out some general PS5 details also calls it a “curated library,” so I wouldn’t expect more or less here.

Another thing we’re wondering about is what happens to the monthly PlayStation Plus free games. Presumably this will continue, as the PlayStation Plus Collection is being specifically called an “added” benefit. But it’s still too early to know the extent of PlayStation Plus on PS5.
