Price and Release Date for the PS5 Finally Revealed

Towards the end of the PlayStation 5 showcase event on September 16, 2020, Sony finally revealed the launch date and pricing for the PlayStation 5. It will be launching in most regions on November 12, 2020. The standard edition of the PlayStation 5 will have a standard retail value of $499, and the Digital Edition will be lower, at $399. So if you’re going to forego physical copies of games this generation, you can shave a hundo off the price.

We’re still waiting on full details for when PlayStation 5 pre-orders are going live, especially when it comes to that weird lotterly-like email folks with PlayStation Network accounts got. However, not long after the show Geoff Keighley of The Game Awards stated that Sony representation told him pre-orders will be starting tomorrow, September 17, 2020. But that would be for “select retailers,” so what that means exactly remains unclear.

The regions included in the earlier release date are the USA, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. For Europe, the Middle East, South America, Asia and South Africa, the release date will fall on November 19.

As a reminder, the standard PlayStation 5 comes with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, so you’ll finally be able to watch 4K movies on a PlayStation device. Going digital only will save you the money, but not do you any favors if you have a physical PS4 collection. That said, Sony also revealed a new PlayStation Plus benefit, called the PlayStation Plus Collection. This is basically a competitor to Xbox Game Pass, and it will be offering a library of top-tier PS4 releases. It isn’t clear if this is a static library, or if the games available will rotate in and out to some extent.

Sony also confirmed that the PlayStation 5 launch lineup will include Demon’s Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Destruction AllStars and Sackboy A Big Adventure. It also seems like $69.99 will be the new standard price for PS5 games.
