Despite all the craziness out in the world right now, Niantic is trucking along with its hit game Pokemon GO, and is currently coasting off the summer heat from the recent Pokemon GO Fest 2020 celebration. As things wind down and hopefully get cooler outside, it looks like Niantic is mostly taking it easy through September. But that doesn’t mean nothing is happening in September 2020, oh no! Not only is a certain Legendary/Mythical Pokemon coming back for free, but several Legendary Raid Bosses and Spotlight Hours are penciled in for the month. Let’s get into the September 2020 roadmap for Pokemon GO.
Pokemon GO Roadmap September 2020
First off, things get started on September 1, 2020 with a month-long Research Breakthrough encounter. This is a cool one, as the featured Pokemon for this research event is Alolan Raichu. As is usually the case with these, you may also be able to get your hands on a Shiny version.
Next are the Raid Bosses! For September, Niantic is running through a different Legendary Raid Boss for every week of the month. Here are the official times and details for those Legendary Raid Boss changes:
- From Friday, August 21, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), Heatran will be available to challenge in five-star raids.
- From Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, September 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), Cresselia will be available to challenge in five-star raids.
- From Friday, September 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, September 25, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), Articuno will be available to challenge in five-star raids.
- From Friday, September 25, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Friday, October 2, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7), Zapdos will be available to challenge in five-star raids.
In addition to those times, every Wednesday at 6:00 PM (local) Niantic will run a Raid Hour for that week’s featured Legendary Raid Boss.

- Tuesday, September 8, 2020: Houndour will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for catching Pokémon.
- Tuesday, September 15, 2020: Tentacool will be in the spotlight, and you’ll earn twice the Candy for transferring Pokémon.

Finally, September’s GO Battle Night will take place on Thursday the 24, from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM (local). During this time you’ll get double Stardust for participating in the GO Battle League. You’ll even be able to fight up to 100 battles, a whopping 20 sets compared to the usual five.
And as a reminder, as we covered earlier there will be a new Special Research story towards the end of the month starring Victini! This is also the last month Jessie and James will be appearing, so make sure to take care of that event before September 30 if you haven’t yet.
