Earlier this month, the Deadly Premonition 2 director apologized and offered a course of correction following the backlash concerning how the game portrayed a trans character by misgendering them and also painting them to be an incestuous sexual predator. Hidetaka ‘Swery’ promised to rework the scenes in question and it looks like he delivered because the newest Deadly Premonition 2 update does just that as well as tackling those dreaded frame rate issues.
Backlash aside, another drive behind negative reviews also concerned the game’s frame rate, which has been seen as laughable and almost unplayable by many players. While this patch did address those frame rate issues, it looks like the character corrections remained the priority with the first steps towards frame fixes laying down the groundwork for what’s next.
While no official patch notes have been offered outside of a social post, the director took to Twitter to outline some of the bigger parts of the update and the hurt the initial call caused the community. With the tweaks provided with this update, he did tell fans that he won’t “change my creation anymore” following removing the deadname references in the game and the misgendering lines. A few language barrier issues have caused discontent when speaking with his fans, but here’s his latest update from his standpoint:
My poor English and misunderstanding of the problems seemed to hurt many people. But that’s not my intention.
Sorry again.
However I won’t change my creation anymore. Unfortunately. I’ve already done everything my friends and fans, and the work and its characters need.— Hidetaka SWERY Skywalker (@Swery65) July 22, 2020
I already removed that “deadname” line from scenario.
And already fixed / change other a few lines about gender issues. “Brother” “She /He” “Lenny” and few more, after discussing with sanity check team Including diversity.
In spite of, Why am I still atacked? Ah English skills…— Hidetaka SWERY Skywalker (@Swery65) July 22, 2020
This followed shortly after his apology and promise earlier this month:
Good evening everyone.
We updated 1st patch!! Still continue to fixing another task.
Please enjoy the journey in Le Carre!!#DeadlyPremonition2 pic.twitter.com/IPkiE4KepP— Hidetaka SWERY Skywalker (@Swery65) July 21, 2020
Regarding the frame rate, many took to the game’s subreddit to talk about seeing major improvements, though the full correction of this issue is still very much a work in progress. As for the game itself, Deadly Premonition 2 is now available on Nintendo Switch.
