An inside look at the creation of DOOM.

DOOM is a franchise that took the gaming world by storm and continues to be a community favourite even to this day. With yet another adventure coming out soon, it’s no wonder that interest in this series’ origins would be high and that’s exactly why the story of id Software, as told in the 2003 non-fiction book Masters of DOOM, is being adapted into a tv series.

Deadline reports that USA Network has greenlit a Masters of DOOM pilot with James and Dave Franco’s Ramona Films at the helm as producers. Masters of DOOM, the book, has been hailed for its incredibly detailed recollection of how DOOM became a pop culture phenomenon and how the vision of id Software’s co-founders came to be. The experience is described as “the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero.”

For those that have not read the book, which can be found here for anyone interested, it follows the lives of the co-creators through the ups and downs of franchises like DOOM, Commander Keen, and Wolfenstein. It also dives deep into just how much these franchises have shaped our community and other games available today, as well as how the tensions rose numerous times that ultimately resulted in John Romero’s firing.

Tom Bissell is poised to write and executive produce the new show, who you may know from his work on Gears of War 4, What Remains of Edith Finch, and even the book Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter.

We don’t have a release date at this time but this is just one more gaming-inspired series to add to the books following the big Final Fantasy reveal earlier today.
