Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Is Now Called Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga on All Storefronts

For some reason.

Ninja Theory had a brand new Hellblade title to debut during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, simply called Senua. It’s a departure from the highly cinematic sequel, with a greater focus on action-adventure gameplay.

That’s not all the studio did in the last 24 hours, however, as it also updated the title of the second game in the series to make it more consistent with the original.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Title Updated

The first game starring Senua is called Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, so it was always a bit strange that the sequel ditched that naming convention in favor of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. It wasn’t a confusing change, but it did feel somewhat unnecessary to reverse the subtitle. It also meant that the title wasn’t properly ordered when browsing your game library.

Whatever reasoning Ninja Theory had back in 2024, they’ve now gone ahead and rectified it to bring the sequel’s title in line with the naming convention of the original release. You can see the update in the changelist on SteamDB (spotted by –R on Resetera). Here’s a screenshot just in case:

The title change isn’t just reflected on Steam but Xbox and PlayStation Store pages as well, even if the URLs still follow the original naming convention.

However, if you head over to the landing page for the title on Xbox’s website, it still says Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

You have to wonder what prompted this change all of a sudden. It’s not like most people didn’t already call the sequel Hellblade II in the first place, but it is interesting that they decided this was the right time to do it. Maybe it has something to do with Xbox now being called XBOX? We can’t know for sure, but it was mildly amusing enough that I felt the need to report it.

Senua, the Third Entry

The third title in the series, planned for 2027, is called “Senua” and completely ditches the naming convention of both titles. Ninja Theory actually addressed this change in their interview on Xbox Wire, explaining that the new game is fresh and meant to be different from the previous titles and serves as more of an additive entry in the series.

Here is the relevant bit from the interview:

The title feels telling – why is this simply Senua and not “Hellblade III”?
The title of just Senua really reflects that this is something fresh and new and different. It is a different style of game. I think Hellblade I and Hellblade II had an intention that we delivered on – but this is a different intention. I think of it as being additive – we’re taking all of that goodness and adding the types of things that people expect from a premium action-adventure game.

Given how Hellblade II largely lacked traditional gameplay in favor of a highly cinematic experience, Ninja Theory is now expanding on the original’s combat, exploration, and puzzles in Senua, aiming to recapture the gameplay style that resonated with many players back in 2017. Senua is headed to PC, Xbox Series S|X, and PS5 in 2027, and you can read more about its many new systems in the Xbox Wire interview.
