The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Goron City, Heat Resistant and Death Mountain
How to make it through the Eldin Region
If you’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you may have come to a point where you need to get to Goron City and Death Mountain, but you’re having difficulty getting there or finding fireproof armor.
To get to Goron City and Death Mountain in Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you need to have heat resistant items or clothing with heat resistance like fireproof armor (referred to as flame resistance in the game).
You’ll need to use these heat resistant items or gear with heat resistance the entire time you’re traversing through the Eldin region of Hyrule in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This is where Goron City and Death Mountain can be found.
This article covers heat resistant items and everything you need to make it to Goron City and Death Mountain in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Heat Resistance
Before you can even think of traveling to Goron City, you need to prepare with heat resistant items. This is not to be confused with the Gerudo gear as you’ll need flame resistant items for the Eldin Region.
If you’ve been to the western desert already, you probably have at least some of the items or gear that offer heat resistance, but that’s not enough for the Eldin region.
You will need flame resistant gear or items to make it through this area. There are a few easy ways to get the items and gear you need so let’s get to it.
Your first destination before you get to Goron City should be the Eldin Tower that will give you a map of the region. Gliding east from the Akkala Tower is probably your best course of action.
You’ll encounter the Foothill Stable just southwest of Akkala Tower, near the Mo’a Keet shrine. Check out our video walkthrough here if you need a better idea of where the Foothill Stable is located.
Once you arrive at the Foothill Stable, speak with Gaile who should be around the cooking pot just outside the stables.
Keep the conversation going and she’ll offer to sell you up to three Fireproof Elixirs that provide level one heat resistance for 4:20.
While you can purchase just one or two, the best value is getting all three, and if you plan of stopping at any shrines or enemy strongholds along the way, you may need the extra time.
Gaile Fireproof Elixir Prices
- 1 Elixir = 60 Rupees
- 2 Elixirs = 110 Rupees
- 3 Elixirs = 150 Rupees
You can make these elixirs easily with at least one Fireproof Lizard, but they’re primarily found in the Eldin region, which means you may not have come across many before this point. It’s best to just buy the three elixirs and be on your way.
If you happen to have a few Fireproof Lizards, you can make the elixir using a single lizard and almost any monster part. For good results, try cooking one Fireproof Lizard with Bokoblin Guts. The longer you want the elixir to last, the more Bokoblin Guts you should include in the recipe.
Toss in four Bokoblin Guts with one Fireproof Lizard and you’ll get level one heat resistance that lasts over 20 minutes or a level two heat resistance that lasts over 15 minutes if you get a lucky draw.
If you’ve already been to the Forbidden City in the Gerudo area, you should have the Gerudo or Desert Voe gear sets, both of which offer heat resistance in some form.
While that works well for the desert region of Gerudo, you need flame resistance for the Eldin region because you’ll be passing close to lava-filled pools.
Goron City
To reach the Eldin Tower, take the northern path from Foothill Stable. You can climb up the south side of the mountain where the tower rests and avoid many of the enemies that you’d encounter if you took the main road.
Once again, you can see this path in our video embed above. You won’t need heat resistance until after the tower, so don’t worry about it just yet.
Once you reach the tower, drink an elixir to prepare for the heat. From the tower, glide northwest to get back to the main road. Qua Raym shrine is found in the lava stream to the left of the main road, but you’ll burn through all of the time on your first elixir if you head to the shrine.
If you picked up three, this isn’t a problem, but if you only got one or two it’s best to come back to the shrine later.
If you continue north following the road you will come to the Southern Mine. To the left you’ll see Kima sitting on the ground (he’s the only Hylian so you can’t miss him).
Speak with Kima to start the Fireproof Lizard Roundup side quest. If you deliver 10 Fireproof Lizards to Kima he will give you Flamebreaker Armor, which grants level one heat resistance.
This is the same as drinking one elixir, so if you complete the quest you won’t need any more level one elixirs like the ones Gaile gave you.
You can find most of the lizards around the Southern Mine, just make sure you sneak up on them so they don’t run away.
Continue north from the Southern Mine to reach Goron City. There will be an eruption along the way, just take cover under any overhanging rock formation and you should be fine. When you reach Goron City, take them main path toward the center of the city until you reach the first small bridge.
Just before the bridge, head right and the first store on the right is the Ripped and Shredded armor shop. Head inside to find the Flamebreaker Boots, Flamebreaker Armor and Flamebreaker Helm.
You will already have the body piece if you completed Kima’s side quest. Technically you don’t need to buy anything here because you can use the Flamebreaker Armor you got from Kima along with an elixir (which you can make yourself with all the lizards around) and be fine for the warmer areas in Death Mountain.
However, if you don’t want to worry about a time limit on your heat resistance, pick up at least one more piece of armor so you have two pieces of the Flamebreaker set. This gives you level two heat resistance which is enough to get you through all of the Eldin region.
Ripped and Shredded Armor Shop
- Flamebreaker Armor – 600 Rupees
- Flamebreaker Boots – 700 Rupees
- Flamebreaker Helm – 2,000 Rupees
Death Mountain
There are several quests that take place in and around Goron City, but if you’re looking to take down the next Divine Beast, you will eventually head to Death Mountain.
There are a few different ways you can reach Death Mountain, but if you follow our video walkthrough embedded above you will go through many of the quests in Goron City and eventually get to Death Mountain and the Divine Beast as you continue through each part of our video walkthrough.
You need to head east from Goron City to reach Death Mountain, and there’s a shrine along the way, but for the most part you’ll only need to be around Death Mountain while you’re dealing with the Divine Beast.
There isn’t much to do in the area once you’ve taken down the Divine Beast, but with the heat resistant knowledge you’ve picked up you should be ready for the Gerudo area in the western desert. Just remember that the Flamebreaker armor set won’t protect you from the desert heat.
