Dark Souls 3 – How to Farm Embers and Souls
This article covers how best to farm Embers and Souls in Dark Souls 3. Embers are very important in Dark Souls 3 because they allow you to summon people into your game for cooperative play and increase your health considerably.
Souls have the same function they’ve had in almost every game in that you spend them to level up your character and purchase items from various vendors. Needless to say, both of these items are very important, so knowing the best ways to farm them can be extremely helpful.
Defeat Bosses in Co-Op
The best and fastest way to earn both Souls and Embers is to place your White Sign Soapstone outside of a boss battle and wait for someone to summon you.
When you complete the boss battle, not only do you gain an active Ember (if you didn’t already have an Ember active), you also get another Ember in your inventory. In addition, the further into the game the boss battle is, the more souls you’ll earn for helping to defeat it.
For example, if you help defeat the Dancer of Boreal Valley, a boss you fight a bit later in the game, you earn 15,000 souls, but if you beat the Deacons of the Deep you only get about 3,000 souls.
If you don’t have a White Sign Soapstone, you can purchase one from the Shrine Handmaid at the Firelink Shrine. Once you have this, head to a boss you’ve already defeated by going directly to the bonfire they left behind. Run outside of the boss chamber and use the White Sign Soapstone, then wait to be summoned. While you can do this for a boss you haven’t defeated, you’ll have to fight your way there and likely won’t have a bonfire quite as close to the boss chamber.
The easier bosses go down a bit faster, so if you’re only farming for Embers, start with the first few bosses and work your way up if you aren’t being summoned as much as you’d like. If you’re farming for Souls as well, it’s best to use a boss a little later into the game so you get a decent number of Souls with each run.
Enemy Farming
You can also find Embers when you defeat certain enemies. Keep in mind, the higher your Luck stat the more likely it is an enemy will drop an item, and the more likely it will be that the item is an Ember. Some enemies have slightly higher Ember drop rates than others, but there isn’t a way to guarantee you’ll get an Ember drop from these enemies.
If you’re early in the game, take down the Lothric Knights in the High Wall of Lothric area. Once you defeat Vordt of the Boreal Valley you can use that bonfire to spawn very close to two Lothric Knights. Just run up the stairs outside the bonfire to find them. If you’re toward the end of the game, you can farm the Lothric Knights outside of boss battle against Lorian and Lothric in the Grand Archives. These enemies drop Embers at a slightly higher rate.
NPC Shops
You can purchase a limited number of Embers from various NPC shops in Firelink Shrine. The Shrine Handmaid, Greirat and Unbreakable Patches all sell a limited number of Embers. If you’re in dire need of an Ember, this is one way you can get one without needing to team up with anyone. Keep in mind, stock is limited and once most NPCs are out they won’t be getting more. Save these Embers for when you really need them.
Boss Souls
If you don’t want any of the items from Ludleth of Courtland in the Firelink Shrine, you can use the Souls you gain from defeating bosses. These Souls give you quite a lot of normal Souls when you use them. Remember that you only get one of each boss Soul per play through. If you use one and decide later on that you want a weapon from Ludleth which requires that specific boss soul, you’ll have to wait until New Game Plus to pick it up again.
