Witchfire is out now on Steam after a year of being exclusive to the Epic Store Games. It’s still in early access and will likely be in this form for at least the coming year. Since this is an Unreal Engine title as well, there are a few technical issues that it shares with other titles on the engine, especially if you have certain hardware. If you’re running into the “Out of Video Memory” error while playing Witchfire, here is what you can do to fix that.
Fixing the Witchfire Out of Video Memory Error
If you own a 13th or 14th-generation Intel CPU, you’re likely running into a crash with the “Out of Video Memory” error while playing Witchfire. This is because of the ongoing instability issues with these CPU chips, which Intel has been slowly addressing in collaboration with different motherboard manufacturers.
For now, we recommend the following to fix the crash while Intel works on a definitive fix.
Current Stable Fix: Update BIOS to 0x12B Microcode Patch
The first thing you want to do is update your Motherboard’s BIOS. Intel has released the 0x12B microcode patch in collaboration with most motherboard manufacturers, which should fix the problem in Unreal Engine 5 titles at the cost of some performance. The performance loss is minimal, and users with these chips have no choice but to upgrade, as the ongoing stability issues lead to permanent deterioration.
Currently, this patch is the best bet, and even though updating the BIOS can be intimidating, it’s the best thing you can do for the long run, and not rely on temporary fixes.
Temporary Fix: Use Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility
If you don’t want to update your BIOS, you will have to manually adjust the recommended PL1/PL2 limits for your CPU using Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility.
- Head over to the following link to download Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility
- After it’s installed, set the Performance Core Ratio from 57x to 55x or 54x and hit apply in Basic Tuning
- Make sure the utility is running in the background, and it should fix the issue
Generic Troubleshooting
If you don’t own a processor from this series, you can try the following generic troubleshooting suggestions.
- Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables
- Switch to your dedicated GPU if you’re playing on a laptop
- Update Windows to the latest version
- Make sure you have the latest GPU drivers: NVIDIA, AMD, Intel
- Verify game files in the Steam or Epic Launcher client
While this should reduce the frequency of the crash, we highly recommend players opting for the BIOS update instead. As stated, this is an ongoing issue, and will likely require a few more updates till 13th and 14th-generation CPU owners can rest easy. If you aren’t on these cursed CPUs though, Witchfire is a blast, and we had a lot of fun with it last year.
