I can finally see!

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 has a very cinematic presentation that makes use of a variety of different post-processing effects, as well as letterboxing. While these effects certainly create an otherworldly look and feel, for many users, effects like chromatic aberration and film grain, in particular, can be disorienting. If you want to disable these effects in Hellblade 2, here is how you can do so.

Disable Chromatic Aberration and Film Grain in Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

To disable chromatic aberration and film grain in Hellblade 2, you need to add a few lines to the Engine.ini file.

  • First, open Windows Run by hitting the Windows and R keys together
  • Enter the following address, and press OK
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Hellblade2\Saved\Config\Windows\
Hellblade 2 Configuration location in Run
  • Here, open the Engine.ini file using a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++
  • Now, add the following lines at the bottom of the Engine.ini file

[SystemSettings]
r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0
r.Tonemapper.GrainQuantization=0
r.NT.Lens.ChromaticAberration.Intensity=0
r.FilmGrain=0

  • Save the file (Ctrl + S), and exit out
  • Launch Hellblade 2, and the image will be much sharper overall without both chromatic aberration and film grain

Comparison Screenshots

While the effect is hard to show in screenshots, you can see that the image without chromatic aberration is sharper with more pronounced detail around smaller objects like rocks on the surface. Similarly, the film grain effect is absent from the presentation now, and there’s practically no grain in the screenshot.

I have also uploaded the screenshots on Imgsli so you can use the slider function, and zoom in on the details.

Restoring the Effects

If you want to enable the effects again, simply follow the steps shared above, and remove the lines you added. Make sure to save the file when you’re done.

Additionally, you can also remove the letterboxing effect from the presentation using a similar tweak.

While it’s understandable that these effects add to the presentation on an artistic level, it’s important to give players some degree of control over them. We hope that the developers decide to add toggles in an upcoming update.
