Valve Announces Steam Machines for 2014

The company will invade living rooms sooner than expected.

Following up on the rumors of a potential SteamBox console, Valve announced that it is indeed working on Steam Machines, which will bring the PC gaming experience to living rooms sometime in 2014, through the use of devices that will run SteamOS, a free operating system announced by the company on Monday.

“Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world,” said Valve in the announcement. “We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you.”

The company paired up with “multiple partners” to produce the device, though a final model hasn’t been revealed. That said, Valve already finished up a “high-performance prototype,” which it will distribute through an open beta that will kick off later this year. You can register for said beta here.

More information on the Steam Machines should be coming over the next few months, including a final build, pricing and availability.
