Why Does Dragon’s Dogma 2 Have Mixed Reviews on Steam? – Answered

Once again, microtransactions.

Despite receiving glowing praise, Dragon’s Dogma 2’s rating on Steam could confuse many fans if they check it as of writing. Capcom’s latest release has a user rating of ‘Mixed’, and while an improvement from its previous “Mostly Negative” rating, the consensus amongst Steam users seems to be a disappointment.

Why Has Dragon’s Dogma 2 Received Negative Backlash?

The reception from critics about Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been extremely positive, which begs the question of its current rating. However, the ‘Mixed’ rating is largely a result of the surprise introduction of microtransactions as well as poor performance for many users. With no prior notice of the inclusion of microtransactions, players are upset at the prospect of monetizing in-game features like fast-traveling and changing character appearances.

While the Deluxe Edition does offer extra goodies, it appears that you can get them by spending real-life money as well. This seems to have made several users very unhappy, as microtransactions have a negative wave around them especially when included in a premium-priced game. It’s worth noting that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the first Capcom video game that costs $70 to buy on both PC and console.

Since the debacle, Capcom has issued a public statement on Steam addressing the issue of microtransactions, performance, and various fixes planned for the near future.

Is Dragon’s Dogma 2 Pay-to-Win?

Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t a multiplayer title like Call of Duty or EA FC 24, and you’ll never be competing against others. Hence, you can completely enjoy and complete the game at your own pace. Additionally, all the items that you can buy through microtransactions can also be earned by just playing the game.

While doing so could take some time, there’s no rush to complete all the content, and the rate of getting the important materials like Wakestones is pretty generous. While you could choose to spend if you want, the inherent advantages are not that massive.

Additionally, you can always create new characters with the help of the Character Creator. Here are some of the best Dragon’s Dogma 2 creations made by the community.
